I recently replaced my Zephyr 360 with a Falcon with a Benq. I noticed after putting on the Ixtreme firmware, backups booted slowly(12x firm), the Bioshock intro skipped, and the drive was seeking like mad.

Spoofing a Samsung MS25 I have as the Benq results in games loading as quickly as they did on my Zephyr. It seems like the BenQ Ixtreme firmware has media issues, as the stock firmware is quiet and fast.

Here's a benchmark someone at Xbox-Scene ran

Benq - Original Disc: 1m18s
Benq - Backup Disc: 2m39s
MS28 - Original Disc: 1m18s
MS28 - Backup Disc: 1m17s

All of my burns are on Made In Singapore Verbatim media with a Pioneer 111D burner.

There are threads of multiple message boards about the slow loading issues with the BenQ Ixtreme. Is C4EVA aware of the issue?

Those are my benchmarks on xbox-scene. It's for booting Test Drive Unlimited.
I spoke to c4eva about this and he said that the Benq drives are simply no good at reading DVD+R discs.
So there's nothing that he can do, the iXtreme firmware is fine.

I cross-flashed a spare MS28 and all is well, obviously that solution is not ideal for everyone Smiley

Thanks for being the source of the benchmarks Smiley I did the same as you, except with an MS25. Works great. I suppose the Benq will stay in the closest. if I ever need s spare drive.

Maybe it is the laser. Maybe an after market laser or some other laser we could replace the BenQ with?

yeah lowering the default reading speed from 12x to let's say 5x, would really let GTA4 (or any of your games) benefit from way less popups and loading times.

I can confirm this on the BenQ. Especially with Bioshock one can notice the BenQ has problem reading the backup compared to a T/S drive.

Lets hope it doesn't have a sooner wearout effect on the laser also (which can be caused by using bad media which have been reported on the T/S for example).

I am having problems with my Benq drive reading discs and like the idea of swapping for a Samsung. Can someone advise me on cross flashing a Samsung MS28 please. Can I spoof the samsung or is it better to crossflash. Had people saying not too swap out and spoof as easily detectable. Any proof to this?? Thanks in advance.

Chromium posted above regarding cross flashing.  I suppose I mean the way you can cross flash a PC DVD Rom drive to be Region 2/RPC 1 etc. So didnt know if he meant you could cross flash the sammy/benq firmware. Then saw it was his first post so maybe he just meant flashed.

crossflashing  is using another drive firmware with a different drive.....usually bricks the drive getting this done to.

spoofing is modding a drive existing/original flash to appear/fool to be another drive but same/compatible(even modded) firmware.

I think Chromium is describing spoofing...thats what you want.

peace,
