Just a small question from a noob...can i find out the firmware version of my hitachi drive by dumping the firmware? The reason i am asking is that i did a full dvd window mod and cut up the metal casing to make fixing brackets..and threw the rest of the casing away. Should i dump the firmware and open it with winhex to find the version number and if so where should i be looking for it? Thanks in advance.

Read the top of the drive to see what version you have.

speaking of reading.. Maybe you should actually read what you quote and respond to.
Worst first post ever.

reread what you just quoted and think it over. maybe you will understand

Yes, i was quick to jump the gun and did not read/interpret his message fully.  I appologize for that but was the "maybe you will understand" necessary?  The first sentence would have been more than sufficient and no further belittlement was required. Simply because it was my first post, does that reflect upon my intelligence?  I will read closer next time BlueCop, as i would hate for you to have to get off your high horse and correct me again.

Sorry for the rant and the incorrect information provided.

Using the slax boot method to switch to modeB will not work, since it doesnt have drivers to support pci (as far as i have read).  I have the same or similar controller and the crossed wire method worked for me.  This will allow the drive to be recognized in windows, will allow you to use memdump to dump your firmware, and will allow you to use Seventhsons flashing proggie to write sectors of your firmware at a time.

It is possible to get the drive detected via usb but there is on *some* adapters the problem that the drive is recognized as hdd... nevertheless you can give it a try (please be sure to pick the latest version of the live-cd)

I can confirm it's working: This is what I used to flash the key from my Samsung to my Hitachi drive:
flashsec47_win %1 hit_se.bin 90004000 1000

Where %1 is the drive-letter and hit_se.bin is the ecnrypted FW-bin file with the new key.
