Hi, I have a xbox360 that only goes to please insert an update disk screen (never to the system blades).  I've tried downloading the updates (specifically the compability update and the su200760000 000000 updates) and burning them to a cd-r and dvd-r both high quality verbatims.  It will say loading for about a second then go back to the update screen.  I've tried all the games I have, hoping one of them would update it but I get the same thing.  I've also tried connecting it to the net and by loading the updates on usb, but nothing happens.  I'm not sure if the dvd drives laser is crapped out or not, the laser does move up and down trying to read the disks (both original game dvds and the burned updates).  By the way my xbox's drive is a toshiba samsung ts943 ms25.

Would I be able to put any(like the one in my computer with sata connection) dvd drive in the 360 by just swapping out the pcb board?  If not, would I be able to just take out the laser (if it fits) from any dvd drive and install it into my xbox's dvd drive.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

you have an incomplete update. you need to put in the medium that the update was started with, i.e. the right game disk, a burnt update disk, or a HDD with the update. I doubt the drive is defective.

also, try holding the sync button while you power up and keep holding it.

Thanks for replying.  I have tried holding the sync button before I turn on the console until it's fully loaded, but it still only goes up to the please insert update disk screen.  There use to be a hdd with this xbox but it has died, would I need the exact hdd that was on this xbox to complete the update?  I've read that someone with this problem tried using a new or different hdd had no effect on it.

I believe so, yes.
try calling MS, maybe there's another button combination to get out of the update process.

I had a similar issue with a box I repaired today. I can't say for sure if you need the same hard drive. I do know this. I got in 8 broken units with hard drives. I don't keep the Hard drives matched with the consoles. It told me specificly i wanted the hard drive because of a failed update. I picked up the first hard drive in a stack of 8 and it worked. So maybe I got lucky and picked the right one, maybe it didn't have to be exactly that one..

Just figured I'd add that, maybe you can snap in someone elses hard drive and see what happens.
