if you remove the front of your xbox, you can see under de dvd drive,(trough a hole) 2 wires. if the wires are yellow you have a lite-on, if the wires are white you have a Benq.
replace "wires are white" (BenQ) with grey...I can confirm that is correct - thanks for the tip gigabite

When Microsoft gives you an unflashable drive wait till it is hacked by someone who knows more than you I think is the phrase you are looking for.
But ya I would really love to know what the internals of those LiteOn newegg.com drives look like...maybe we could get replacement lasers and such for em.

yeah lowering the default reading speed from 12x to let's say 5x, would really let GTA4 (or any of your games) benefit from way less popups and loading times.

I have never seen a DVD drive change without a motherboard change - they ship the motherboards to the repair centres with the DVD drives already attached. They are not programmed at the repair centre.

http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/download/9993/may be this is more useful. its just DH instead of DG. // i'm now using xfs to read the firmware. 'till now my pc hangs when trying to read the fw, but im trying on...

This might be a stupid idea and it is my first post, so don't worry it probably won't be my worst suggestion...
I'm assuming that all of the firmwares for the other drives encrypt the data in the same way and the only difference is the key. I'm guessing this by the fact that you can spoof a drive and use the same key in that. If I'm correct, then I'd say it was safe to assume that this drive does it the same way as well.
I don't know exactly how the key changes the data read from the disc but if it is always the same, i.e. a value of 65 is always sent to the 360 as 23, then it should be possible to calculate what the key is. All we need is a disc that contains known data.
If the idea works on a drive that the key is known for, then I can't see the idea not working.

Sorry about my post, I just found out that I'm not the first to think this is a good idea. Maybe my thought of each byte being encrypted separately is quite wrong and maybe the encryption is by blocks of many bytes. It would clearly take a full dvd of test data and quite a while to work out.
I'll try and make any future posts a bit more well-informed.

hmm...because you said that i'm kind of thinking this is like the BenQ at first - that is it all had to be done "manually" before the software kind of progressed/was modified. That being said, anyone want to try a switch on VCC (using TMF's pinout) - be warned...not for n00bs don't blame me if you screw it up...if you succeed then I guess you have the first dump of Lite-On fw...if not...then no harm done (to anyone who has one and wants to attempt it, please...think about it I can draw a diagram if need be)

i'm 99% sure someone hasn't tried it...can someone please give me a high quality picture of there drive without the epoxy (may as well make it easier rather than lifting legs which even I hate !) and i'll draw a diagram of what to cut and wire to a switch etc (basically my idea is to cut all VCC to the drive...now that's 11 spots if you include the 1.8v...so that's 11 switches but then again only 8 if you only shut off the 3.3v) now..flicking all 8/11 switches all at once precisely exactly (if need be) is going to be quite hard..but...it all comes from 1 power source (well so I think) so hopefully it all traces back to a resistor or something so it's something simple...*just an idea*

*just a STUPID idea* that is A quote from this very same thread: http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=9647.msg63586#msg63586Its really not that hard to understand.

The switched vcc method, tricks the mtk into thinking the flash is blank, allowing it to enter a "recovery" mode that allows the excellent Schtrom software to flash/read the external memory device. His tool uses/activates special signalling across the sata bus to activate the mtk hardware that makes this possible.
The new device has no such hardware. In fact it is specifically designed (patented) such that fw that is programmed is NEVER able to exit the device. If the device physically does not have the ability to expose the fw, due to completely different programming hardware, no amount of vcc trickery is gonna dump it.
I thought I explained this pretty well in the link posted above, but I guess people only hear what they want to hear, or they dont get it at all.

Thank you Tiros! You are definitely right! There is only one small chance, if there is a bug in the new MTK design. But: FORGET TO EVEN THINK ABOUT IT, FOLKS!
