I have made the test myself. Slax can put hitachi 79 into mode B without a problem. The dvd drive is detected in windows and can play movies. The problem is that it canīt read/write into the firmware. BUT, if someone change the Firmware Toolbox software to read THE DRIVE KEY in the right place then we are good to go.

no. that's the entire point of the 79key. you can not run code from memory with the 79 anymore, which means you can not read or write the flash either. if it was merely a matter of a small software change, it'd have been done long ago.

you can put a 79 in mode B with Slax...but you cannot read or flash it because the code has been removed, the passkey (and infectus) - adds in this code and allows you to read / flash...supposedly the next version of fw toolbox will support software flashing of a 79

..waiting for WHAT? there already are ways, the 79key isn't that expensive. there's no status on the toolbox, and since the project hasn't been touched in months, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I wouldnīt be happy to pay 150 USD (thatīs what they charge here in brazil) and in the next day find out a new firmware toolbox that do the trick as easy as with any other drive model.

the 79key doesn't cost 150$ anywhere. even importing it from another country would run much, much cheaper.

thatīs the cost they charge to install ixtreme in a 79īs. I will not do it myself because I find very disturbing messing with soldering (even having some experience like I do) things small as need in passkey installation. If I do something wrong the whole videogame would be gone because I wouldnīt have the drive KEY to replace it. So yes, I donīt like passkey. And yes, it cost 150 USD here to get it unlocked. So, yes again, I would really appreciate if thereīs a software of doing it.

well - if you screw up a 79 install completely....the fw chip is still fine, even if you blow the whole drive - it is still dump-able via external programmer
