could be a bad cable connection or the laser fried.

yes i'd say check all the cables inside the drive, make sure there in securely (be very careful), then if you still get open tray you could try tweaking the pot and cleaning the laser but...in the end you will have to buy a new laser

I've seen this posted many times as a possible fix "Adjust the laser".

Just wondering how the laser reading or not reading media can trigger "open tray error"!?!?

I thought this is handled by the tray in/out switch.

Why buy one, when you can buy two for twice the price.

nonono you see...an open tray "error" can be caused by the laser not picking up the disk...generally meaning it's dirty or dying, so if you clean it and tweak the pot (reduce the ammount of resistance to the lasers voltage so it's "more powerful") it will pick up the disk and the open tray will go away

I opend it up and the problem is that the disc is not spinning, but the lens is moving.

if the laser doesn't sense a disk at all, the disk will not even spin.

Problem fixed. I replaced the flat cable in the drive there was a cut in it. Bad bad MS.
