Didn't know that the ROM version was important to spoofing.  Crud.
I have a Hitachi drive without the casing that surrounds it.  Just the guts.

Are there any markings or signs of which ROM version it is?  I think it's a v78 because I can mode B with SLAX but not the 2 wire method.   But I'd like to know for sure to eliminate trial and error if possible.

Thanks!

without the casing, if the PCB has epoxy on the SST chip then it's a 78 or 79...if it dosen't it's below a 78

Word!
It does, but it responded to SLAX and shows up in Windows, so I guess it's a 78 for sure!

As far as I know a 79 will also respond to slax (modeB) You just can't dump it...
