Just as topic says. When i leave my hard drive in it will just stay at the white screen with the Xbox 360 logo on it and will eventually go to the dashboard saying "unplayable disc". However when i take the hard drive out it loads the game. Also, my xbox 360 will read dvds, and CDs with the hard drive in but no xbox 360 games. thanks in advance for the replies.

Can you hear any irregular noise from the HDD? It might be dieing. Try to format it and see if it helps.

Go into the system blade, then the memory. Highlight the HDD, and press Y for the device options and it'll walk you through it.

strange noises like ticking (tick tick tick tick tick constantly fast)...or shhh tick shhh tick...common ones I can think of....any of those and your HDD is broke...regardless if you don't have either noises sounds like your HDD is broken anyway but try a re-format if possible

Now my xbox 360 doesn't seem to read any 360 games even with the hard drive taken out. Although it still reads DVDs and CDs. I tried a cleaning kit and it had no problem reading it.

Might of been just a coincidence that it was working with the hdd attached, now that it won't work with it off and the dirty disc errors. If you feel confident, open the dvd drive and try to clean the laser with a little bit of alcohol on a q-tip. Sounds like it could be a couple things that you could look into (HDD, DVD drive, possible loose connection.) My best guess is the dvd drive (or some part of it is going up, if not dirty & can be cleaned) and will need to be replaced as long as you have the key for it.

yeah i'd say clean the laser (search for my tutorial on here) and if that dosen't do it tweak the pot (again search for that tutorial here too) and if that dosen't do it, replace the laser (or drive) - as of course check all your connections
