I read somewhere on the forum that the SS not only varies between region, but also within region (namely different language releases in Europe). I've noticed that a lot of SS are popping up on torrent sites and was thinking that people are gonna be wasting discs if they download the wrong SS for their backup instead of taking the time to dump their own SS.

Is there anyway to verify (before burning a disc) that the SS is compatible with the iso its been merged with?

no. and if you are making backups, you may as well dump your own. if it's not backups, it doesn't belong here.
