I watched the videos on how the xbox1 was hacked and have been trying to read up on all the stuff going on with the 360. In the mean time, I was wondering if there are any good write ups/technical explanations of how PS2 modchips work and how the PS2 was hacked. I started out by modding my PS2, so I feel it'd be a good idea to finally find out what was going on all those years ago Wink

Bizarrely that's one of the things that motivated me to post all my ramblings. I did find an open source PS2 modchip once & I can tell you they watch the ROMs data bus for the PS2 string during boot to identify the model, patch some bytes from the BIOS as its being read to RAM (no $#!t Sherlock) and there's some monkey business with the DVD Rom controller (for which I never did get a datasheet Sad ).

I wish I could find it and the PSX FW I had - we should have an archive of retro hacks, I'd add my homebrewed XKlone XB1 chip....

the sx28 which was originally a clone of the magic3 but then got rewritten and for a period the source code was open. was on ps2newz (ithink b4 they changed servers / hosts) and had a few 'how it all began' threads
