Limited is putting it mildly. Its a shame a more available drive wasn't chosen.
you cant just use any sata drive out there ... they have to be as equal as they can be (chipset and so on). choosing a drive that isnt compatible with the FW would mean that you have to write an almost complete new fw |

I bit confused, so what the video shows is a normal pc drive being connected to the xbox and its running games fine...
But is a drive key needed, a orginal.bin file etc? Hope the team provide more detail because ppl like me got bricked drives and no original keys?
Can someone explain to me..thank you

It is a standard drive running a xbox firmware, so all the requirements are still there. Still need your key.

in theory any drive will do, if the controller is the same, and flash is the same.
so You could finde other drives, that have same chip like samsung, lg, benq uses.
If you manage to find one, then flash with a matching fw, and good to go.
(i think. can be wrong, correct if needed.)

ah yea, as TMF posted.. Some soldering is needed on tray status and eject button.
But the basic idea is the same.
If the controller and the flash chips are identical, it *should* work.

UPDATEThe Philips DROM6316 drive is still using x360 retail benq firmware and dvd key. A small modification enables to run backups. ( please don't ask for the firmware, it's not my project and still not finished!!) Eject function is now almost fixed. But... What's the use when the BenQ drive fw can be read, C4E had the firmware already about done when the banhammer was there in May this year and will soonish release the BenQ firmware that can be flashed on the original 360 BenQ drive?
I mean, it's neat one can pull this trick off, but all the effort when soon it can be done with so much ease...

uhm.. for example, paying up to 80 bucks less for a replacement drive if yours dies? also, the PC drives often have much higher media compatibility.

Now isn't it some coincidence... My Hitachi 79 died on me 2 days ago. And I have a DROM6316/34 lying around... So, since I've never flashed a BenQ before, can I use this little baby right now, with my original key and spoof it as Hitachi79? I am not interested in backups at the moment and I think I could figure a way to solder the eject button. If yes, do I have to follow the same procedure as with VAD6038?

You can get new samsungs on ebay for like $50 Also going through all the trouble to mod this drive to work properly and then the fitting issues with the case... Id imagine these drives cost what like less than $30, so id rather pay more and get a real drive than have the issues of a crappy fit. Altough props for good work though. This would be good if you want to put a 360 inside a PC case. |

prisoner_of_time mentions having a "DROM6316/ 34". Do we know if the 34 is significant, or is it just something trivial like the version of the firmware the drive shipped with? Can any 6316 drive be used with the 360, or is it only a specific revision? Just want to be certain before possibly getting one of these. |
