Hi all, just got a console back from M$ repair center, opened her all up and the CPU and GPU have the epoxy on them. This console came back with an ms28 and NO "new" HDMI port or anything (so it's a core, with epoxy), proof for all you un-beleivers: gigabite EDIT: the board has everything a normal console would, it's all exactly the same (nothing has been removed) but I noticed that the SMD capacitors on the back of the board under the CPU are now different. Before they were all one colour (one resistance) and now some are darker (higher resistance? - the darker ones are what I call the "troubled ones" wich fall of/separate from the board due to heat)

could you do a close up on the ram chips.....or just answer if the ram chips are epoxyed as well.

RAM chips are NOT epoxied at all, only CPU and GPU

This epoxy looks like the same epoxy used on the Samsung drives SST chips, it's white and chalky looking

they probably realize that their X clamp design, as was hypothesized a while ago, is putting undue stress on the board/cpu and it's cheaper to re-flow it and lock it in place against future warping Then it is to redesign the clamping mechanism and impact the baseline board design. Maybe this is a quiet nod by MS that the Red Death is caused by the chips contacts cracking.
And, I think the color codes would indicate different capacitance for capacitors, not resistance. Is there a digit on there too, I think the color codes indicate an order of magnitude, different color for 10 pico and 10 microfarads.

Sorry resistors and capacitors I get mixed up on, theres no number but I can definently say that the "troubled ones" are darker...

nice one, that semi-answers my question in my other post. Question still stands tho, are they epoxying out of the factory for new runs as well as refurbs?
What's the build date on your refurb console?

This console is not actually mine, but the manufacturing date is 2006-11-08 (American dates I think)...I forgot to add 2 things...I live in Australia and this board was definently 100% replaced as I added silicon to the previous board on the SMD caps on the GPU and CPU and now it's not there (apart from the fact that the CPU was lifted from the board). I will be sending my own personal console in for repair soon to see if it gets the epoxy treatment. Maybe Australia has only started getting the epoxy treatment ? One thing I noticed when I was flashing this console is it was an ms28 drive...but it was spoofed as an ms25?? I've asked the owner to report back to me if he has any problems (he dosen't know how to pull it apart and he dosen't wish too) so if there is any problems we can really see whether the epoxy really works (I have only seen one Elite owner complain of 3RL...but I think it was BS)...

Chip capacitors do not have any color code, or any markings at all which indicate capacitance. Different shades result from different encapsulation lots, different manufacturers, etc. In general there isn't any way to tell a 1nF from a 10nF from a 100nF capacitor without removing it from the board and measuring it. Further, since they have a +/- 20% tolerance, even measuring it doesn't tell you exactly what the schematic says.

Cool thanks for the info, my camera is reallly crappy (3 mega pixels, but theres something wrong with the power usage because you put new batteries in and it says there flat ??) I used to have a 6 mega pixel one but I couldn't get a mem card for it so we returned it...just wondering why this hasn't been posted on XBS?? Isn't it important information about xbox/'s ...ah well, soon i'll be sending my box off to M$ to see what happens so we can confirm that they are now epoxying chips, anyone else who gets there box back from M$ anywhere (and your willing to open it up) please check and confirm (tell us where your located) if they have epoxy on the chips

this is kind of old news. but glad to see you posting your findings.
the Elite already uses an epoxied CPU/GPU
and why would you get back a motherboard that has HDMI when you didnt send them an Elite.
HDMI for standard consoles is NOT a for sure thing.
only more speculation by people who dont have a clue.
there were rumors via major nelson that its not out of the picture but last i knew ther ewas absolutely no news about putting hdmi on the regular consoles. only the Elite.

LOL JESUS Gigabyte! the FOCUS of your cam wasnt set to "closeup". find the little "flower-button" and use it! one would expect you can operate a digital camera

The epoxy thing is nothing new. When lead free solder spheres were introduced into the electronics industry everyone, especially the computing industry, had problems with them. IEEE and ROHS came up with an expoxy underfill to use during manufacturing to correct the problem but many companys had already had designs in the field that did not use the epoxy underfill. So they began to add epoxy to the corners as a means of keeping the solder spheres bonded between the BGA assembly and the board during any times of "mechanical stress". We had a report from an ATI rep that MS went to ATI with a design plan and they didn't want to listen to the advice of ATI to add the epoxy. Eventually MS went back and asked why they were having so many problems. The reply was something to the effect of hey we offered to help.
If you want to research the epoxy look up smta.org.
