my VT6421 card hangs on detectng the drive also with 0800 firmware during boot, anyway if i connect the sata cable when i'm in windows, it finds the drive, i can send the 4 CDB commands to retrieve SS, but doesn't accept the FF 08 01 01 command to unlock the drive, so, at least for me:

VT6421L pci controller is good for:

-flash using hexedited mtkflash, but connect the sata cable only when already in dos (the onboard bios hangs on drive recognition)
-SS dump, but connect the sata cable when already in windows

not good for:

-unlocking drive and make game iso. For this (and also SS dumping) i use a sata-to-usb adapter or a sata-to-ide converter.

when you say a hexediyed mtkflash do you mean the NF4 version or a diffrent one ?

Should suit my purposes - prefer wxripper method anyhow (besides already tore into a PC DVD rom  Grin)

Right this thread has quite a bit of contradicting information. As I read it the only PCI cards that work reliably are the VIA VT6421A or VT6421L chipsets?

Has anyone found a card that has this chipset in the UK or a list of cards that have it. No bloody supplier seems to think it's worth putting this info into their specs!

Actually I'm in the UK and bought my VIA PCI on Ebay -UK. I'll try to see if I have the link still .... in fact I'm 110% sure I got it on this forum somewhere ... just check back in this thread or the other TS FW dump by software thread. Card arrived today and only cost £14 inc delivery. The seller has tons apparently. Wink

Yep, 2 SATA cables and 2 power cable adapters. Think its the same card as Bitcrusher is using and he has reported it works fine for reading & writing the firmware. Hangs windows with TS drive attached but this can be avoided by attaching the SATA cable after XP has fully booted.

I can confirm this card as working.  Wink
Creative i/o with via 6421 chipset.

Also, just a note. Remember that DOS cannot handle long filenames. (I made a mistake and named my file xtremecsb.bin )

Intel D865 Perl board working
Cannot make the Creative IO with VIA6421L to work with my PC (Original and hexedited mtk)
As soon as I power the 360, it freeze the PC, if I power the 360 before the PC, drive is not detected

Anyway, with Intel board, read, write is OK
Currently playing a backup of DOA4 on RiDATA DL

The fastest way to I found to get MTKFLASH to work with the VIA chipsets, is to
power on your PC, then wait until at DOS prompt, then power on your XBOX,
then run MTKFLASH command, it will show only two IDE selections, with NO SATA,
then pick one, and then press CTRL-C which returns you to the DOS prompt, then
rerun the MTKFLASH command, and holy-cow you will now see a SATA selection!

Have you disconnected EVERYTHING? all HDDs and ODDs apart from the TS? Otherwise try the hotswap technique described earlier in this thread. Failing that, check the msinfo32 readout for your card tallies with what your version of mtkflash thinks it is. You can find out how to Hexedit the exe on this thread too.

Different collor and box but same layout and name so I think it will work just fine. The card I've bought comes from a dutch ebay seller who ships within the EU for 4 euro's. So if you wanna be sure buy this one http://cgi.ebay.nl/PCI-2-port-Serial-ATA-SATA-RAID-Controller-2x-IDE_W0QQitemZ8813165954QQcategoryZ175QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
(all in dutch though)

This thread has become overly confusing so I am going to clear it up. I have a VIA 6421L controller. To make this card work you need two things.

Here is the Hex edited MTKFlash

http://rapidshare.de/files/20676748/MTKFLASHvia.zip.html

Here is the updated drivers for the card

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_RAID_V520C.zip

Once you get to the point where you send the FF 08 01 01 command DVDInfoPro will give you an error. Now I know for me it still unlocked the drive and I was able to make a working backup, I don't know if this is the case for all the cards but I assume it is. Also if I just sent the FF 08 01 01 command the drive wouldn't always unlock for some reason I have to send the commands for the security sector and then the FF 08 01 01 command to get the drive unlocked.
