I was wondering what would happen if you never connect to live, what can microsoft do to stop the recent firmware hack? and if its mandatory to always update the xbox360 for future games to work, what happens to all those people who dont have live or maybe even internet?

apparently they have the ability to upgrade the xbox360 via files on a game disc..... we'll have to wait and see. I for one wouldn't play live ever with a hack, but this doesn't mean I can't be effected by Microsoft if they include mandatory updates with future game releases. Plus i hate xbox live anyways so f*** it

You can bet your ass that ms will issue a patch via live at first to block the hack, then all future games will have a mandatory update included on the disc to block it. It's going to be a cat and mouse game, but when ppl don't wanna pay for games they will always find a way to steal them at any cost. IMO the 360 is useless without live, live is the best online service ever invented, hands down.

Hi there, so is it technically possible to (re-)flash the dvd-firmware within the xbox360 (by ms)? Which means, the SATA chipset in the 360 supports it? Just for information, donīt know much about SATA chipsets. regards freaksworth

M$ should never try to do this.

well, you are probably right, just turning of at the wrong time will mess up. So, you say it is possible.

i dont even think it would be possible, how would microsoft detect it? the only way for them to dump the firmware is through the same debug commands we used. there checksum was already defeated. how else could they even detect this hack? my reasoning is that if they cant detect that a burned disc was inserted then there pretty much out of luck. there isnt much they can do to this firmware if they dont want to break compatibility or the drive itself. that flash chip wasnt designed to report hacking attemps, it is only there as a dvd controller. macdennis can you add anything that i might be missing. you know more about this then most people. what really could microsoft do?

I'd imagine it's possible for microsoft to detect this in that the firmware could just be read, or parts of the firmware could be read. I'm not an expert on the way that the modified firmware works, but I don't even know if there's anything preventing them just from trying to read the area of the disk that the SS is burned to, and compare it with the response from the drive.
