Hi! My boyfriends' xbox started short time ago to make a growl-like noise when it runs, even without CD in it. So I supposed that the problem was the hard drive. (His xbox isn't modded)
He owns many games, about 20, and already two of them are not running anymore on his box (Max Payne 1 and 2)
He planned to buy a 360 but now he's unsure, knowing that they've already changed 3 time of optical drive kind... I think that it's what he told me, anyway it was something making him think that 360 are not yet reliable so he's unsure now if he will buy one... I'm not helping him, always saying not to trust Microsoft products... but I feel sorry for him... since he spent a lot in all those games he bought... and he havn't bought the cheapest ones...
So... I knew that we can turn a xbox into a PC running Linux, I would like to know if I can turn my old PC into a xbox by switching BIOS and doing things like that
Config : Celeron 1.4GhZ (P4) 384 Mo RAM 40 Go HD ATi Radeon 9200 128Mo (I know it's not the best one in the 9000 series but it's already an ATi with 128 Mo ^^) Some Dlink PCI ethernet card 10/100
I know that this config makes twice what's inside a box so I think I don't have to worry about that?
Would be very nice if I could bypass the USB device of the xbox so I can install it on my PC... is it possible to? (I have a very good soldering iron =) )
(Don't know if you noticed, but english is not my native language ^^')
Thanks to anyone who can tell me anything about that ^^ and don't worry about making me doing big handling XD

That aint going to work since the pc hardware is different so would be incompatable, the best your going to be able to do is run an xbox emulator (if there is such a thing) on the pc but youve got no chance with a pc of that spec.
Why not just mod the xbox and replace the harddrive with the one out of the pc?

That aint going to work since the pc hardware is different so would be incompatable It's not. The xbox contains a x86 CPU, like any PC and some hardware like a HDD, soundcard and gfx card. Yeah, what topic starter wants could be done. In fact, it kinda has been done already in the form of an emulator: http://www.caustik.com/cxbx/It's an emulator, but runs most of the code directly, without emulation. The souces can be downloaded from their site. Anyway, it would be more beautiful if you'd port the xbox OS to the PC. So you could just boot up your PC and it would be a XBOX. If I understand correctly, that was your whole idea. It's feasible ... if you're a (really) good programmer with good hacking capabilities and have some, say at least 2 (probably LOTS more needed), years of free time

I would try to softmod the xbox and pull the drive serial number before the box dies. Then use the serial info to replace the HD completely. The risk you are taking is that the drive might die in the middle of the process, but if the drive dies the xbox is pretty much dead anyway so I think it would be worth a try. You mentioned you are good at soldering so you could also try installing a modchip and then installing a new harddrive. the tutorial section of www.xbox-scene.com will probably be helpful.

Thank you! I'm glad to know that it's feasible! I don't worry about having time and very good programming skills, I will actually start computer programming studies next year and I thought that I could use this as my final project so I will have 3 years to do it (but I wish I will be able to end it before that... my boyfriend's xbox won't last until this time) Thank you again! I will also try to use an emulator ^^

Yeah I will probably mod his xbox too... because turning my PC into a xbox will take too much time for him ^^' (weird couple... he's washing dishes during i'm fixing his computer bugs *rolleyes*)
But I keep the idea of turning my PC into a xbox just for the challenge 8D... and for a PCbox that will probably last more than a xbox

Well, ya, it has been done (no, not like that)
Xbox Alpha Dev kit, was made of PC parts, though it wont run any retail games, and isnt 100% of the same hardware, its fairly close, the initial boot code resembles the MCPX code, and it even unpacks an xbox bios image, then the kernel , and runs it!
But no, it wont run games. It is fun though, need to tinker with mine some more!
Even two beta retail dashes, one of which looks close to retail, among other things!

My boyfriends' xbox started short time ago to make a growl-like noise when it runs, even without CD in it. So I supposed that the problem was the hard drive. (His xbox isn't modded) I'd make a bet that either one of the fans in the Xbox is getting ready to die. These fans are easily replaceable. I had an old Xbox 1.0 that the GPU fan made a growling sound. This is a sign the fans are getting ready to die.

The last several posts are good: It might not be the Hard drive. But if it is the HDD, then getting the HDD keys while the drive is still active will open up options. To do so, there is another post going on, on this board that is then relevant: http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=8293.0 "best way to mod xbox with i have access to another modded xbox?"
