the SS is in an area that can normally not be read or burnt, on original disks. that's why it needs to be relocated. as for the flashability, it's simply.. there will be firmware updates for the drives by the manufacturer, and most of the hardware is based on PC hardware, so it makes sense to use a flashable chip.

Aha, that clears the ss part up.
But about the flashability, for instance on the original xbox, are there different xbox's sold with the same drives but updated firmware by the manufacturer in the meantime? (I mean, I, as a end user, have never had to update my dvd firmware on the xbox, right?)

Maybe you can write-protect the flash chip by cutting a leg of the flash chip? We'll see soon enough, but for now its nice to play xbox live with backups

You're not silly so I'm sure there was a reason that you don't leave the original cable in the motherboard with it's handy 90 degree connector and run the extension from the drive. Why is that?
I am planning to do the same soon (I've not opened my 360, I like to research first and get things right) and yours is the best solution I have seen so far.
umm what? the stock cable is 90 degree on both ends, and is still plugged into the mobo, and the extension cable IS plugged into the drive. and the cable is not homemade, i bought a external sata pci slot cover type deal from compusa for $10.. but it had the power connecter also with it, so i had to dremel off the sata connector

becouse all dump all the exact same size ass your dumpdvd movie u have to extract So this is okay right? Unfortunately, I've been able to do everything else I need to do except burn the actual backups and play them on my hacked xtreme.bin due to lack of money for DL's. So since money is tight, when I actually can get some DL's, I don't want to make them coasters. Is WXRIPPER+SSmerge a better way to backup the games? Also, I know this has been addressed before and answered, but in Isobuster, It does not have to say it's a DVD right?

Because MS$ is basically using standard computer parts... Standard DVD/CD drives have flashable chips. If they were going to change that, they'd have to pay extra to the company providing the drives because they would have to modify their design, and possibly assembly line processes. The whole point of using standard parts is to save $. That is why the chip is flashable Another thing: What if they found a bug in the firmware 2 weeks into assembly? Since the chip is flashable they can just update it. If it wasn't they'd be stuck with 10 million chips that were worthless. It's risky.

my story:
got a premium package and a core system.
found a non-samsung drive in a premium and a samsung ts drive in core system.
i switched the drives and see if the samsung drive can work on the premium motherboard (i thought they were just same thing, the mb's)
but what i found was that the systems booted fine but they failed to recognize both original and backups. when i switched the drives back to original, the back ups ran just fine.
then it's safe to say that the motherboards know which drives are connected.
i dumped the image from a system that i've switched the drives (samsung-premium mb), but that game works only in a samsung-coresystem mb combination.
so now i'm wondering what the mb-drive check mechnisms are.
and big ups to c4e

there is more information on this than you can read, each drive has a unique key, if you patch the keys from both drives to eachother they will work in the other boxes.

We'll see soon enough, but for now its nice to play xbox live with backups Why would you want to prevent writing to the flash??? M$ doesn't need to write the flash... They can verify if it has been modified with read access. It is a matter of time when the cat and mouse game starts.

Does this also apply for ppl who are migrating there hitachi key to a replacement TS drive? 4000-4200 block isn't enough for some drives. my key starts at 4290.
just copy all the data from 4000 till you see all FF's
