Is there any way to tell what kernel version is installed on a new 360 just from the box?

I want to try and get a new exploitable one, and I've got a friend in a store who can check all the boxes, but if there's nothing on the box to tell from, then my plan won't work lol.

nope. and I seriously doubt you will still get an exploitable one, the exploitable kernel is well over a year old.

Yes you (indirectly) can. You can see the Manufacturing Date even when Packaged. There is a small "lid" on the outside that when opened shows serial number and MFR Date. I bought mine ~2-3 months ago (searched different stores for a good MFR). Look for slightly damaged packages: people tend to not buy them and they stay longer in a shop Wink.

If the MFR Date is from 2006 then its almost certainly an exploitable xbox since the xploit was fixed in Jan 2007.

I bought a new machine this week and it came with stock 5759, manf. date 2007-08-28. Most new machines with manf. date 2006, has a kernel in the 2xxx range, aka exploitable.

I bought another [Premium] about 2 weeks ago from K-Mart (in Australia) and had 2585 kernal...Sammy drive, no new heatsink or epoxy - this was apparently new stock also as I went there 1 week before to buy one and they said they had no stock (this was when Halo 3 came out) I went to another K-Mart and they said the same thing and told me to wait a week - was manufactured in 06 though...bought a box about 5 months ago and was also 2585 kernal..78 drive no new heatsink or epoxy (Premium, K-Mart Australia.) Your best bet it to look for manufacturing dates (lift the little tab to see the serial number and look down a little and you will see it without opening the box at all)
