Hi Can anyone point me in the right direction. ms28 drive: when a disc is loaded the lense on the laser moves twice and the disc moves half a turn then stops. i have moved the laser to different points on the slides, returns back to centre when disc loaded but does not search for a disc when loaded. tried new laser just in case faulty but still n.g could it be a fuse blown? cheers

when did it start, did you flash it or was it all working and just stopped. i had the same problem when i flashed it with 4.0 or 4.2 i don't know for sure. Flashed it with 5.2 no more problems.

Hi had the xbox a while. it was already flashed when i bought it. i had problems with some discs with open tray problem so i tried the "rubber band mod". i heard a loud noise as the drive tried to read the disc, i presume the band was a bit too wide. i had adjusted the rubber band so it created a 1mm cushion for the laser but it has never worked since. i have borrowed another drive to see if the laser moves, which it does but obviously will not load games. i thing the problem is with the drive, possibly something blown? cheers

use maximus fw toolbox
you will have to dump your fw first with mtkflash, you can use xtreme bootmaker to make a bootable usb stick. all the instructions you need come with the package. Then u can use maximus firmware toolbox

he wont have to dump anything if he kept a back up of the original firmware,,,, use the firmware toolbok to extract the key, then inject it into your 5.2 firmware or whatever firmware you need, then boot up to dos and flash your new drive.
you cant just take an ms 25 or 28 drive and replace it with with a hitachi i don't think so be SURE you read up on things and ask if you don't know or can't find the answer.

well easy way to know if it has a mod chip, open the dvd drive, just for easy screws.
removing it and putting it on the new drive is a differen story, i dont think any of the modchips are easy to install.
but you do realise that the modchips are not the same kind of modchip that are on the xbox 1. all they are is a modchip attached to the dvd firmware rom so you flash the chip and not the firmware of the dvd.
from what i have seen of them, they arent very easy to install. but i dont look at those modchips very often simply becuase flashing the drive's firmware is much easier.

Back again and still stumped. When using mtkflash to dump the key i can get to drive detected in dos 'xstream primary master' but when i select the drive nothing happens, just freezes until i hit the esc key. I either get a message 00 or 51, should be 70. i have tried various boot methods but still no luck. I think i need the 0800 disc to unlock the 'firm guard' but the drive will not read anything. Is it possible to buy a new drive & fit a modchip to it without having a drive key? fitted many a chips to ps2s so soldering not a problem cheers

You need the key. Earlier posts indicated that you had already flashed it before and hence you should have the key stored on that original read you did on the drive. If that's the case, you can buy a new drive and flash it using the old key. No key, no love. Cal

Hi Any other way to disable the 'firm guard' apart from using the 0800 disc, desoldering parts etc... by the way the drive is a ms25 not 28. don't know if it makes any difference? cheers

Here's what I do:
after extracting the key....remove the drive!! turn the console over and write it (with a sharpie) on the bottom of the metal case as it only works with that board. hard to loose if you do that. easily cleaned off if not needed any more or for a return.
that "loud pop" is not normal....prolly toasted the drive....haven't made much sence outta the rubberband mod....not saying it doesn't work tho. seems the tray status is not being triggered correctly. never ran into that problem....so it's prolly a manufacture defect that only effects boxes made from the factory that made the affected drives.
you should contact the person that did the original mod and request the key if they still have it. If not you can take the drive back to them and see if (with there experience) they can atleast get your key for you. then you can fix up a new drive.....
also try another drive and even tho it wont read the disk correctly it should read and give an error to put disk in a 360. that way you know your board is ok. then get your key as mentioned above.
I'm not sold on the firm guard protection as I have in the past week used a DVD movie to flash in a couple of ms25's and ms28's both which supposely had the firm guard on it. I didn't realize I wasn't using the 0800 disk till after the flash was done. This won't work if your drive is not reading as you posted it does nothing now. this is why I suggest getting the key from your modder. and checking for functionality of your console.
peace, zil
