The problem is that you just dont know when it will occur. Some people get no freezing beforehand and bang turn it on dead, others have freeze ups a few times then dead. Well today I have had two systems with the open tray errors, two being ms28 sammys. No rubber band fix or special foam would not fix the problem.
There are lots of problems, M$ stands for Micro$tuffed we just need some people to put these on tee shirts and parade outside every M$ building.
They just need to be accountable for the defaults & make some effort to fix them now...When it works its a fantastic system..but we need reliability..for the money they expect everyone to outlay..
When I say people are on there 3rd & 4th console they are not M$ warranties refurbs, they all have extended warranty with game stores & all have been swapped with brand new consoles straight out of a new box!!!

Like the article on xbox-scene, glad this has been raised after all the ranting of reliability.
I feel this pressure needs to be applied and maintained as I really want the 360 to be market leader in the future but really concerned.
M$ really blew an opportunity I feel releasing the Elite without no change in design.
Congratulations to Nintendo - "all the memories of trying to finish Kungfu, Duckhunt and some game using the add on robot- Glad you are still around for the next generation"
If M$ wants to the claim top dog in the console wars they must maintain respect and listen to what the loyal users are saying and work hard to make the changes.

Wow, the influx of failures is getting worse by the week. I'm seriously looking at getting a smd rework station as there are a lot of people boards to practise on.
I have been finding that the x clamp mod is really a hit and miss to fixing the problem. Only had one board out of three working after the mod and still locking up during play.

I just got my ROD 2 weeks ago. My console is manufactured April 2006.
I think the main thing here is that you can't leave the console in a cabinet with other stuff. It needs to be out in the open away from any other source of heat.
A friend of mine has a launch console with no problems, he has it out in the open.

So far, since I have had my console it has never been in the case and has the internal xmc fan. Yes it looks like $#!t and is loud but have not had any issues yet, touch wood!!
I recommend anyone who owns the 360 and wants to try and preserve the life is to:
Rip out the metal sheet that sits in the upper top case, interference guard or what ever they call it, traps heat!!
put a xmc internal fan inside the system,
if you can leave the top case off then you wont have the heat issues but still run the internal fan.
All modders rip out the upper metal sheet and give it back to you customers. Those that I have done have not come back yet. Just becareful not to cut up your fingers, razor sharp.

Well so far I have two out of four units I own go red. I just feel so dam lucky to be in the 3%-5% failure rate, I think with that luck I should play the lottery more. One unit has been to M$ twice now for repair of the same issue, I am giving up on M$ and looking into other repair options. Reflowing or Reballing both MB, then increase the air flow through out the case. My other two Units I jumped up the fans to 12V the day OI bought them and added another 12V 80mm intake fan Above the CPU I have not had any problems for nine months now on those two.

What I would like to do is see what kind of Quality program Microsoft has, if it is ISO or Six Sigma they have to share there PPM openly. 3% - 5% is fricken lie. I am sure they leave out internal rejects and rework when calculating there failure rate.

It is definitely more like 15%. I don't think I have ever witnessed such a defective rate on any consumer electronic.

Thinking and hoping the problems are gone, with the elite. I am not to excited about it but HDMI port will give the 360 the much needed capability of true digital 1080p support. Just hoping it doesn’t FRY UP.

There is no real fundamental design change, so failures will continue.
What Ms could try start doing:
Rip out the metal top dust guard of the case,
Add another internal fan
(Next Firmware update) I would like to see fan control tweaking systems like with XBMC.
One of my untested theories which I believe is also contributing to solder cracking is when switching off the 360. I feel that when the system gets turned off there are spikes in temp at the gpu surface area, as the fans shutdown before gpu cpu have started to cool so it gains higher temps & drops in temperature. These extreme fluctuations over the period of time adds too much stress to the lead free solder composition.
The 360 fans should auto adjust when the system is on & run for a few minutes after complete shut down to allow the gpu & cpu to cool down in a controlled consistant manner.

I worked out the fix at last, ten consoles living again, using RBJtech method with a difference.
I found without gas gun the console would freeze and lock up randomly or would not boot.
I gas gun the gpu, yes heat that thing up to extreme temps and lightly press on the gpu & CPU and let cool.
For the case screws I use this combination:
spring washer underneath the case then washer, washer inside case then nut. I do all screws this way.
Put Mobo in,
I use alot of artic silver (generic brand) on ram gpu cpu.
I put spring washer on every screw then, I put heat sinks on then put another spring washer on, then regular washer, then nut.
I find the gas gun is needed to repair the bad solder joins!!
Hint: when testing put the white air tunnel back on as it will over heat without it on.
Also rip out the metal dust guard that sits in the upper top shell..
I found I had to gas gun the gpu several times on some consoles. time consuming but worth it!! All been running fine, like new....
Cheers,

Thank-god we now have 3 years on this crappy hardware.
After several weeks half of the 360s I did the x-clamp replacement have needed to be redone or tighten. Not doing this work anymore as it is only a bandaid solution and too time consuming.
Will be interesting to see what M$ will change in design if they can be bothered but they will most likely spend more money on copper heatsink and clips rather improve the fans, time will tell.
I can see the wii being the most successful console out of the 3 by 2010 in profitability just by selling to families. Like the hare and the tortoise....
