Hello there, i just updated my console with the Spring Update.

It's ok, doesn't look that different really, but for me it's a little more functionable.

Also the kernel has been upgraded to 5759 with this new update.

And i can confirm that Hitachi drives with 2.3r2 Firmware are still able to play backup games.

I''d wish i had some technical discussion about it, but unfortunatly.. Please go ahead maybe someone can inform us with more details about this kernel version

Test how safe it is by trying to download the HALO 3 beta next week
with a backup copy of Crackdown - I dare you...

The new update apparently gives them the option to test for disc jitter
but the sensing has to be turned on from the server end.

They could just be collecting data right now for mass bannings.

Lets get it straight MS see all backups even legitimate ones
as piracy.

THIS IS MY THEORY :

They also know that every little pirate kiddie would have got
Crackdown from any source they could get it to get access
to the Halo 3 beta.

They also would have extensively tested the firmwares
that were available during development of the spring update
to check if the disc jitter check let them know if a copied
disc was being played.

They are waiting for people to start downloading the Halo 3 beta and boom !

Bye Bye Live GOLD ... Hello Live SILVER permanently on that xbox.

Unless you upgrade to a firmware that combats this check.

This is less severe than killing the accounts completley
and still means people can buy stuff from the marketplace
and play their backups and originals offline.
So MS can still make money.

REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY A THEORY

Remember the Original Xbox bans only started after the most
anticipated and popular Halo 2 came out , as they knew they
could get the most people in one hit.

I feel though that LIVE is now an essential part of
owning a 360 and couldn't be without it myself.

Playing single player games just isn't the same.

So anyway I have my original crackdown , and since this new check
apparently only checks discs and not firmware I will be enjoying
Halo 3 beta.

Maybe you will if you have upgraded to one of the latest hitachi or samsung
firmwares with the jitter check protection.

What I'm saying is not upgrading your firmware to combat a protection
that microsoft put in the spring update like spyware to report back to
microsoft whenever they choose to ask your 360 about what type
of disc is being played is just plain crazy.

They will and could already be collecting data on people on live
playing copied discs , the older firmwares make it easier for them
than the newer ones, no-one knows for sure if the new firmwares
are 100% safe to play backups on live but the older firmwares
definatley do not combat the jitter check.

MS has to be seen by game developers to be trying to combat piracy.

But in the same breath they do not want to totally ban them from live
because of the money they make from the marketplace.

It makes sense for them to bust people down to a silver account
where they can still make money off them for Downloadable content
and know full well that some of these pirates will buy another console
and some original games to play on live gold.

But hey carry on using the MAXIMUS-GARYOPA v2.3 rev 2 but don't tell people
that its safe. No-one even knows for sure if the newest firmares are 100% safe.

But wouldn't you rather upgrade to a firmware that is trying to combat the
disc jitter sensing , than using an older firmware that definately does not ?
