Today while playing Gears Of War (Backup) the game froze... Did a restart on the machine and it started back up no problem... Then while in the game the screen went black and from what I remember no sound.. Then restarted again and the machine is fine.. No I am not getting the 3 red lights but I was wondering if you think it was getting to that point.. This is a launch date Xbox 360 with a modded Hitachi drive...

It could be the drive going bad but I seriously doubt it 'casue in my experience once you get the 3 Red ROL error once, you'll almost certainly get them again, it's only a matter of time.

It may take an hour or it may take a month but it will almost certainly happen again and you will need to send the console back in for repair if it's still under warranty. I really wanted to believe that it was ventilation issue, or maybe a bad backup or that it was even possibly a power surge and it would go away, but trust me it doesn't

Even if you can't send it back for repair there is hope. I've had to use a heatgun on my 360 4 times so far but it seems like I've finally knocked the problem on the head.

I'm going to detail my efforts in attempting to fix my 360 with the heatgun in case it can help you at all 'cause I think your going to need to do this at some point. You'll see that even when it all seems too much, there is still hope.

Anyways here it goes:

I went to the hardware store and bought the best heatgun they had. I bought a 2000w GMC platinum heatgun with variable heat settings and not just the standard HI/LO setup of many of the others available. It even has an LED temp guage on top to show you what heat it's working at. It also came with plenty of handy attachments.

Each of the first 3 times I used it I always kept it well under it's maximum heat setting because I was afraid that I'd damage a component on the 360 motherboard, but even though I'd get it working again after a couple of days I would start getting lockups and crashes that would eventually lead to the 3 Red ROL error again.

On the 4th attempt I pushed the heat setting as close to the max as I could without setting it high enough that I might damage or burn any of the components on the motherboard (It was pretty close to the max). I thought, what have I got to lose, worst case I wreck the 360 motherboard and I keep the rest of the parts and buy a new console to use them with.

I made sure that I heated the CPU, GPU and SouthBridge slowly at first along with the rest of the PCB but once I'd spent a while heating them up I cranked the heatgun up to nearly maximum (the temperature guage on the gun read between 550 and 600 degrees celsius).

I then really got stuck into the CPU, GPU and SouthBridge areas, still working in a circular motion. After I was satisfied that I'd given them a good working over I slowly cooled the board. Once it was cool I applied some silver thermal paste which was the equivalent of Arctic Silver 5 which I didn't have available to me when I did this.

This time though when I applied the thermal paste I made sure that I didn't go to overboard with how much I put on because with my other 3 attempts I think I put too much on snd when the heat sinks were in place it was spreading it further than I wanted.

It's now been over a month and I've put it through some pretty tough punishment too make sure that I'd got it right this time. I'm glad to say that it's now working better than ever

I would like to say a big thank-you to Team ModFreakz for the heatgun fix.

Anyways I hope this helps
