Do you have the complete pinout for the S802A, or is it identical to the pinout in the toshiba document with the specific changes you listed?  I'm having custom cables made for the purpose of cleaning up an HTPC install for this drive.  Any info you have would be fantastic.

I specified only the non standard pins and how i connected, the remaining pins are identical to the standard pinout of a laptop drive as shown in the pdf i linked.

I've strange behaviour with fan_enable pin disconnected....or maybe the problem was elsewere, i've to take a look at this pin as soon as i've time.

Ok, I'm going to apologize upfront for sitting at the big boy's table, as 95% of this thread is WAY over my head. What grabbed my attention was the post by Geremia about a custom pinout for the S802A. I have been banging my head trying to get this drive to work in a new HTPC, and low and behold now I know why. I have a JAE50 adapter, but I can't get the pinout link to work, it times out. The post describes, in what I'm sure is exquisite detail to people who are versed in these things, how to adapt the adapter, but I don't quite understand what all was done to get it to work. I can mod the power from it's current "floppy" plug to a 12v, I'm that competent, but were the other mods done because they were grounding out on the drive case, or did they need to be cut for it to work? I am so glad I revisited this thread tonight (I've been watching it for hints as to what was wrong with my drive), now a solution is in sight.

Here some details on how I modify a JAE 50 adapter.
It works for me, just use these info as help for building yours, but TAKE YOUR OWN RISK.

There are 2-3 types of adapter on ebay, this kind (take a look at the photos) seems more suitable than others.

Here is the pinout of the SD-S802A

Cut the traces to pin 47, 48, 49, 50 and be sure that they are no more grounded or connected to any other circuit, otherwise you'll flame something Smiley

connect these 4 pins to 12V and modify the other part of the adapter, take care about the pins to lower down, it's important otherwise they will make a short on the drive metal case prominence and the adapter will not fit.
Pin39 of the ATA male it's DASP (DriveActive/SignalPresent), but in the hd-dvd addon is used for enabling the fan on the usb box.
I've disconnected just to observe the signal activity on this pin, but seems that my ATA controller doesn't like it to be disconnected.

Connect the Eject line to a 470ohm resistor, switch "default open" type, ground.
Optionally you can connect Activity to a led by a 330ohm resistor

Some isolating adesive tape on the metal prominence

Not so good looking final result

The connector does not fit very stable, but for me it's ok

@ geremia

is it possible with this mod to run a replacement HD-DVD in an external Ide-Case with USB.
Will the 360 recognises the HD-DVD or work this mod only with PC?

the hd-dvd addon is not a simple usb-to-ide adapter + hddvd drive, it has also an embedded memory unit (not something you can replace with a pendrive or an xbox360 standard memory unit) which contains the hddvd software player.

Ok, so that means, the drive will only work with this adapter on PC but not on the
360 because the memory with the softwareplayer is absent!

Is that right?

Thanks guys for good info.
It works only with Xbox360 HD player,
but it is not working with Toshiba SD-E802A model.
Why?
I could only play back one HD DVD x-r. title, Curse Internal and any regular DVDs.
What is the difference between SD-S802A and SD-E802A models?
And how to fix SD-E802A model?

Are you connecting the SD-E802A to pc with the adapter, or are you swapping the SD-S802A with the SD-E802A and trying to play an hd-dvd on the xbox360? I didn't understand, sorry.

If you are connecting the drive to pc, i'm interested in the firmware and a drive ram dump with hd-dvd inserted (preferibly kingkong usa, otherwise any other aacs protected hd-dvd), you can use this app to do it in one step.
http://rapidshare.com/files/24985414/dump.rar.html

dump.exe driveletter dump.bin 0x0 0x1000000

It will create a 16MB file, can you privately send me?

thanks

thanks for quick responce.
I am connecting SD-E805a with yours addon hardware to PC.
WindowsXP did not see UDFR2.5 format files from player, except only
one 2 years old HDDVD disc "Cerse eternal". "king Kong" is invisible as RAW file system.
But  SD-S805a works well with the same yours addon hardware.
I am more hardware person.
How i could dump this 16M file? What soft do I have to use?
Is it posible to load SD-S805 firmware to SD-E805?
Would it affect performance of XA20 player?
I could answer it myself by putting SD-S805 inside XA20 player.
If you find what is difference, you could get answers for playing back games on Xbox too

I tested SD-S805 with XA20.
It is not working.
It shows error code:4086 4303 on front panel.
It means, that you could not copy firmware of SD-S805 to SD-E805 easy way

I mean, download dump.rar from link above, connect the SD-E805A to pc, insert kingkong usa hd-dvd, if you have not this movie just insert another aacs protected hd-dvd, then on a dos prompt:

dump.exe driveletter dump.bin 0x0 0x1000000

the dump.bin will contain all i need to examine the sd-e805a
