just flashed me benq drive with BenQ iXtremev1.1, backup tested ok could not get dosflash32 going in windows, used dosflash16 in dos mode running off my USB stick which was preped with iprep, only difference was in the tutorial it states: run dosflash then turn xbox 360 ON then OFF then ON, and it will pickup the drive, I had to have 360 turned on at the dos prompt then 2 secs later run DOSFLASH than it will ask that YES or NO question, choose yes, it will look like its scannin saying STATUS: 0051 or similar , this is were i turned the 360 off than 2 secs later turned back on and it will start reading/writing, i had win xp and a VIA 6421 PCI sata card, Thankyou very much to all those involved for all your work and tutorials that i have studied to be able to do this.

For all the dudes like me who suffer from sexy fingers. Here is a batch file to do reading and writing to the benq to reduce accidents. This may be very basic for some but for grasshoppers it may help.
<read batch file> read.bat
<content>
dosflash < cmd_r.txt
<key file for reading> cmd_r.txt
<content>
y5rorig.bin
<write batch file> write.bat
<content>
dosflash < cmd_w.txt
<key file for writing> cmd_w.txt
<content>
y5Wbenq-ix.bin
Always remember to save the orig.bin as another file and make a hard copy of the key on paper as a final backup. There are plenty consoles with lost keys out there in the wild. This batching could be extended to with an overall batch file to automate the whole process. The above batch and key files as well as the contents of dosflash16 will needed to be added to fast or quiet folder. This is untried.
if exist "orig.bin" del orig.bin read make_ix < rename make iXtreme firmware.cmd 2 make_ix.bat> write

Maybe this has been said before, but too important to miss..
I have a VIA6421. Dosflash32 didn't work for me, but dosflash16 did.
However, after reading and applying c4e's hack I got an error after writing the ix-benq.bin to the Benq. Bank 0 through 3 always gave OK, but then I got a message that 172000 (or something in the like) write errors had occured.
I then rebooted my pc and tried again, but now I first did an erase and then (without rebooting the pc) a write. It worked fine then.
Just a heads up should you encounter the same thing.

Sucsessfully flashed Benq drive with c64e iXetreme 1.1
I used Firmware Toolbox 4.5 to replace key. Thats much safer because U can verify if U have a valid benq key in the readed bin!!

Hello ppl...
First post in my hour of need.. Just attempted to flash my first BENQ. I have Via6421 chipset and the VAD6038 drive.
I used the Dosflash16 program to dump the fw. All seemed normal. I was having some troubles getting it recognised but eventually it worked.
After the read I redid the dump just to be sure the file size was correct. I then modified the fw using FiRMTOOL.EXE and again, all seemed normal.
Eventually getting the xbox working with dosflash16 again, the write seemed fine as well. EXCEPT at the end of teh printout which was all OK! there was a line that said 35093 write errors occurred Then BAM, e65. I haven't tried reflashing or anything yet, just want to get my bearings and not make a bad situation worse. I have checked that the key matches in both the orig and the hacked fw and they do.
So I'm here to ask the professionals what to do next.
btw I have modded most of the drives out on the market these days so I'd consider myself fairly competent
Cheers.

Jason, This sort of write error occurs if the whole flash fails to erase. Using dosflash ver 1.4, try erasing first before flashing f/w code.

Hello ive just bought new Xbox360 Arcade and found BenQ VAD6038 inside (HW ver.:J-DA1A4, FW ver.:64930C). First ive downloaded DosFlash16 1.4beta to make backup of original FW. Preped USB key and made moved DosFlash files there. Connected Xbox to S-ATA 1 booted to DOS. Turned Xbox on so drive had some powah .. Typed dosflash for automated mode and my computer freeze imediatly. I have old MB MSI K8N NEO Platinum (rev.1.0 - http://tinyurl.com/2k6lhs) which has both nForce 4 and Silicon S-ATA controller. Ive even tried to disable Silicon S-ATA ports (port 5-8) but still it keep freeze. I wonder which step I messed up or my hw is simply just not compatible ? thanks for help

I have bought a new Elite, which has a BenQ drive. I am currently just reading, searching and getting all the hardware and tools together as I have modded all my consoles successfully (xbox, PS2, Wii, PSP, DS) after careful research and similar approach. I have read the Textbook2008 guide amongst other tutorials and understand most of it. Before I begin modding my 360, It is important to me that I know the procedure to get the box back to it's original state - should something go wrong! However, there are a few things which are confusing me; please correct me if I am wrong...
1. Once I read the original drive key and keep a backup - I assume that anything goes wrong, I can always flash the original one back and the box should be back to it's original state? 2. A lot of people refer to the motherboard key too - is this a separate key? if so, how do I backup this? and do I need to keep this too, in order to return my box back to how it was?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Finally someone who does there research 1. Yes, correct 2. No - the "motherboard key" is what people refer to as the DVD key, this "key" lets you play games and without it (if you loose it) the WHOLE console is a useless DVD player...all you need is a copy of your original firmware and your set gigabite

Unless you mean the CPU key with "motherboard key", but you can't get that easily, and it's not needed for this in any case.

Thanks - much appreciated. Although, not relevant to this thread - I have one more question before I dissapear for a while: my current dashboard is 5766 and I tried going on Live to get the DiVx addon - it asked me to update the dashboard to a newer one - should I do this before modding? Although, I have read some stuff about the timing attacks - should I worry about updating - as I will not be looking to downgrade the kernel until I am totally screwed, right?

if you console is even downgradable at all, it makes no difference what kernel you have installed. you can update without any problem. get the divx download and everything else you may want before you flash.
