(v4.2)  Updated firmware and Make files for Error 66 swapped drives/motherboards from Hitachi XBox 360 and for MS25 consoles manufactured around/after end of May/start of June 2006. There is no change for drives already running Xtreme 4.2x

(v4.2)  Security Sector read improved. Should help with Open Tray/Rubberband error.

I have not updated my firmware at all since the first release and had no need to, until now, would like to know if this open tray on only some of my backups, some of the time, will be fixed with this update or should I plan on doing the rubberband method for the fix if this works well then I should update firmware feedback appreciated.
my open tray happens so infrequently but older titles all the time now.

Update your firmware to 4.2b (I and many other have had problems with 4.2a for some reason) and it should fix your problem, if not THEN try the rubber band method Wink

Try:

using a burner that supports bit setting to DVD-ROM (even though the Samsungs don't need this it helps!)
using Verbatim DVD+R DL

that will probably fix your problem (if you don't have much money then buy 1 Verbatim DVD+R DL  - if you can't afford it then don't complain about open tray :p)

I had same problems with my sammy. It started with just 1 game giving the open tray error but slowly it became worse.

I tried about evrything to solve. As i had 4.2b on my drive already i figured it was no use to go that way. So cooling was next thing that came to mind. After messing around with the inner stuff of the 360 in order to improve airflow through the GPU and CPU and even fitting an external fan it turned out that GPU related heat was not the problem. The problems never disappeared, even not when taking the dvd drive out. No matter what media i tried; the thing just kept on giving more and more open tray errors.

Si i tried the rubberband mod. And guess what...IT WORKED. I had no error since i applied it. I also fixed 2 of my friends' consoles which had exactly the same issues.

Its a very easy fix. Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df5xjUOcLlI for a video. I had to experiment a bit with thickness of the rubber. Not enough wont make the problem disappear and too much will result in a no-go accompanied by some click click click noise of the drive. Took me 3 times to get it right  Grin

Again, heat wasnt the issue. The rubberband fixed all.

All my backups are Verbatim DVD+R DL and pioneer burner that supports bit setting to DVD-ROM also 4x all these backups where done the recommended way, and worked perfect for quit a long time just in the last month or so some of them won’t load at all and some will eventually if I turn 360 off for a few minutes funny seems like this is happening alot, I heard many theories on why and it seems it isn’t the burn it is the drive laser extending to far hence I believe the rubber band fix.
I have seen the video and still have not seen a good tutorial if you can help directing me to a guide to this I'd like to try this method

Thank you this is the way I am going did you hear about a alternative to the rubber band hearing that rubber bands wear like a plastic fitting instead let me know I am searching ideas for the best and most efficient solutions

Wear and tear yeh i hear the same stories but its not all that bad. I used 2 rubber rings (something like this http://rubber-products.chinese-suppliers.com/images/grpywg9-15-.jpg ) instead of the rubber band. Im not too scared they will 'dry out' as the temperatures inside the dvd drive arent extreme.

Good luck with it m8

Edit: i also hear people are using springs that can be found in ballpoint pencils. I think theres plenty of options.

One question 2 rings did you put one on each side or two on the one side?

I put 2 rings on 1 side (just like the movie shows). I tried 1 thin ring first but that didnt do the trick. After that i tried a thick one and a thin one and that gave me the click click click.

I ended up using 2 thin ones (less than 1mm thickness a piece so about 2 mm total) on 1 side. Check the vid; i have about the same total thickness placed on the same rod.
