I have just removed the black $#!t from a v78 and i thought i would test it before removing the chip, when i power on the 360 the power light stars to flash like an earlier version hitachi when its in mode b, the dash board loads up but the tray wont open. I have opened the tray by the white lever under the disc tray and put a game it to see if it spins up but it dosn't, however the lazer moves like its trying to read the disc but the motors aint spinning. I have tested for continuity between the motor connecors on the board and the points on the motor and it has continuity so i havn't damaged the connectors. When i try to open the tray it says opening at the bottom of the dashboard and after a few seconds changes to closeing and then to open tray.

What could have happened while removing the black epoxy? i am 100% sure i have not removed any componants from the board with the epoxy. Please help as i really need to fix this drive. Thanks for your help.

My best guess is that you have overheated the IC

Are there some Hi-Res pictures of a working 78 PCB without the epoxy?

Sure it will come in handy when something goes wrong  Wink
