Using the SLAX CD at no part does it mention that it's being put into modeb. Sometimes I get a status 0x80 error, sometimes a lazy port.
After a soft reboot windows either freezes during loading or once booted up. Sometimes it doesn't freeze but I get a yellow exclamation on my SATA controller (Code 10). This happens with either my motherboard's built in VIA VT8237 or external PCI VIA VT6421a. The drive obviously won't show up.
Using the connectivity kit doesn't seem to work either. The light on the kit goes red as expected but I still get the same as above.
I'm all out of ideas :/
The drive was manufactured in September 2005.

If yes: We will search further If no: Proberly your SATA chipset

I've flashed my Samsung several times perfectly on the 6421a.

Maybe a new driver of firmware for your sata chipset?

There is no new bios firmware and I have tried various drivers for the both SATA interfaces with no success. As far as I'm aware you can't update the firmware on the PCI card? If you can I don't know what specific model it is as it's OEM and completely unbranded.
By the way, the PCI card (6421a) assigns a letter to the Samsung drive in 0800 mode which makes me think drivers aren't an issue.

Some other things to try:
- Make sure any RAID option is off. - Does de SATA connections work with other hardware in Windows? (no yellow exclamation)
This one is a bit tricky: - First boot windows and then connect the SATA... after that connect the power connector to the drive. I added a switch so I can turn the X-Kit on and off. Windows should detect the drive and given it a driveletter. (open / close the drive after powering can help detecting also). When Windows halts... be patient.
Hope this will work

There are no options to turn RAID off on the motherboard SATA. Only to disable the device entirely. As the 6421a is an addon card there are no RAID options for it.
The 6421a works perfectly with the Samsung in 0800 Mode. No exclamation mark, no code 10.
I'm not connecting a live molex to a device. Sure fire way to fry it.

I had an issue the 47 drive won't be detected in Windows. There was a topic (on x-scene i guess) they told me to power on the drive in Windows. That worked!
Now I always connect the drive when windows is still up and running (X-Kit off). Then powering on the the X-Kit. Sata is plug-and-play.
But I realise your decicion not to try.

I no longer use X-kit's anymore as I've had one that decided to fry itself for no reason at all.
I've done a bit of searching around and I've read similar problems with Hitachi's and VIA chipsets. They mentioned that I might be able to invoke Mode B via USB? If so I presume any Sata>USB converter will do the trick?

I have a VIA 6421L and havent had any issues at all with hitachis. Have you tried using slax 2 to force the drive into modeB? If that works and your hitachi is now in modeB, unplug the sata, reboot pc and when you see the windows loading bar plug the sata back in (like creatox said). I havent tried this technique but have read that it has worked for others.
Caster.

I have an onboard VIA8237 sata i used drivers from the motherboard disk which also installed a raid program (which is basically just in the background doing nothing) and i have a h-lg47 dont have the second card installed and it should work. I used the slax cd method which did put up somthing about the mode-b being set then at windows it froze at the loading screen until i hit the eject button. This only happend the first time i flashed the drive. Hope this helps u.

I'll try without the 2nd card, see if that makes any difference. I doubt slax will suddenly decide to make te Hitachi go into ModeB but i'll give it a shot
