Ahhh, fair enough. Does anyone know of a second source? Those shipping fees are out of this world!

Just got my Toshiba-Samsung drive in. Looks to be in good condition. Has a few small scratches on the top. I will test it out when i get home from work today. I won't have any information on it till tommorrow though. my cable tv, internet, and phone are still out from the tornado but luckily i got power. my old drive was F/W=ms25 H/W:005 Ver.A i think its Part No: X800473-016 This drive i got from them is F/W=ms07 H/W:001 Ver.A April 2005 its Part No: X800473-003 I have a feeling these are from the beta dev kit drives. i might be wrong though. here is a link from the SmartXX Dev Kit DVD-Rom from long ago. It was a TS-H943 http://img362.imageshack.us/my.php?image=smartxxxbx360154dy.jpgIts Part No: X800473-009. I can't see the F/W and H/W versions in the picture. I got FREE shiping for being in the US. =) i have heard of those reshippers that will reship things out of the country for stores that don't support international shiping. perhaps that might be cheaper then their shiping charges

WOOOOO. There is NO EPOXY on the flash chip. That will make socketing this thing much much easier. I also forgot to mention that the front clip on the tray is this mid grey color. This is another clue that this might be from some beta dev kitl if you look at this link here http://theconsolewars.blogspot.com/2005/08/smartxx-xbox-360-dissection-mutilation.htmlit has picture of the dev kits at the top of the page and the clip looks to be that same color. I will dump the flash with my willem when i get home today. I might try to use my cell phone tether to get on the internet and upload the dump so people can compare.

Got my Hitachi Drive today.
MFG September 2005 rom Ver:: 0046DH
DVD-ROM Drive Model : GDR 3120L X800475-008
There is no epoxy on the epoxy on the flash chip.
However the flash chiis TSOP
EDIT: Just took a a closer look at the PCB I think it confirms what BlueCop has been thinking. It has the word Pilot on the board.
JD5X 2005/04/27 PILOT
Edit #2: Removed dumb parts of my post. See below.

As far as I am aware, the Hitachi drives all have TSOP packages (with no epoxy). The PLCC32 is on the Toshiba / Samsung.

You are most likely correct on this. I haven't had a chance to open up my xbox 360 to see the inside of that drive yet. EDIT: You are absolutely correct was able to locate a photograph of hitachi board http://www.free-hp.com/userdaten/38928917/bilder/xbox360/lg_platine.jpgAs far as I am aware, the Hitachi drives all have TSOP packages (with no epoxy). So has anybody been able to install one of these replacement drives yet? A good friend of mine's house recently burned down and believe it or not the 360 still works minus the fact that the drive will no longer read disc's. So I am hoping this will be a possible solution. Check out this picture its amazing that this thing works at all. http://www.rastieproductions.com/pic/xbox.JPG

you will have to be able to read/write the flash chip in some fashion. be it desoldering and programing for the toshiba-samsung.
If it is the hitachi there is a software solution to read/write the flash on that drive.
do you know what drive your friend has? have you taken the box apart yet to look closer at the dvd-rom? perhaps it is just a cord that melted or something similar

Yeah its a Hitachi. I have the same drive in mine as well. Both were first day buys. I have looked at the drive and it doesnt have any melted wires etc though I havent investigated completely.. When inserting a xbox360 game it won't even spin up. Though when a burned cd or audio cd is inserted the drive will spin up but not read. I haven't had the time to investigate further yet. I am aware of what has to be done to re-flash the drive and saw seventhson's post recently about doing via software on the hitachi. Though basically this burned out box has become my experimental box so I will begin tinkering soon. I just wanted to be sure that someone has gotten one of these replacements to work before even starting the whole process. Hopefully I can salvage something out of this and maybe put it in a new case or something. Though alot of the front stuff is completely gone and am not sure if a controller will even work with it yet or not. Compared to everything else in the room the 360 held out by far the best.

the 360 HDD is never married to a 360, it works on any 360. I think it's unlikely that the firmware of the dvd drive is flashed by the 360, that would mean the FW has some means of flashing, but the flashing routines are apparently missing according to the research of some people here.
Quietly, the routines start @A000 bank 0 Since there are other versions other than 025 and 07, has anyone post them? . Would help seeing what differences are.

Only problem with this site, is shipping cost outside of USA, When I select CANADA, I get this on top of the base $75 price! SubTotal: $75.00 Shipping & Handling: $137.32 Express Order Processing: $20.00 Insurance: $1.00 Total: $233.32 That is THREE times the cost of the $75 drive, compare to our "friends" ordering the same drive within the USA. Is there anyplace with better "shipping" rates, or within Canada?

Thanks I am still not sure what to do about the front buttons on this etc. But I have a quick question for someone who has a T/S drive. I already purchased a second hitachi....and it seems like I have read on here that you can switch a hitachi with a t/s can someone confirm this for me please. Also has anyone patched commodore's firmware to one of these replacement drives? Just wanted to do a double check to make sure I am not wastin my time/money. Thanks.

Agreed. Some american friend with a few extra dollars should order these in and sell them to canadians less the rediculous shipping cost. I don't presume that shipping should be much more than $30US for expidited, insured and trackable.
