I bricked my drive a while back and sent it to GaryOPA and got screwed.  Be careful if you send your drive out for repair services.   My experience with GaryOPA has left me without my drive and now in need of a new xbox 360.  It's been frustrating and I would hate to see others get caught in my situation.

I think that should be taken with a LARGE pinch of salt.

You've never posted on here before and you don't even give any details of your bad experience or how you were 'screwed' whereas GaryOPA's contributed a LOT to the scene and is highly respected among the community.

I hear ya...long time lurker and I understand that GaryOPA is a well respected guy on this forum.  I respect the work and contributions to the community just as much as the next person. I just had a bad experience with his services that were offered when I contacted Gary a while back and he had me send him my drive.  After a few weeks, I called just about every week and each time he told me that he would send it back.  Gary and I agreed that he would fix it and let me know how much I owed him so I could send him money ($30 was the quote) which then he would ship back to me.  I called and called every week for about a month.  After a month, I called a couple times a week, each time Gary would tell me that my drive would be ready that day and he would email me the firmware then mail me my drive back.  It's been 3 months now, and I still don't have my drive, but I have heard the broken promises.  I tried to call Gary today, but the number is no longer in service.  I am not trying to flame, but I would like to warn those who are thinking about sending their drives out for service.   As I mentioned, I appreciate the contributions to the community, but I also value trustworthy service too...which did not work out for me.

Give the man some more time, seeing as though he probably has a lot of drives that need fixing, and just hasn't gotten around to yours just yet. Also, you never know what might be going on in his life, everynow and then things happen. Just give him some more time.

Dude, give him more time? With all respects to Gary, I think 3 months is probably more than enough. Even if a lot is going on in his life and got many drives to fix, it still wouldn't take 3 months, or att least he could send it back.

That is of course if the guy is telling the truth!

I have to disagree with giving him more time. Gary did say he would ship the drive a couple times that particular day the guy called him. Also 3 months is ample time. You might of gotten screwed or he is just really lazy about shipping stuff back. Who knows he might have a legit reason for not sending it back although like I said he was qouted as saying he was going to ship it that particular day.

I tried calling him - 888-778-1331 (which is also listed on his signature and in his profile), but the phone number is no longer in service, nor was I told the number was going out of service.  Everytime I called him, he told me that he would email me the firmware.  I also followed up with emails and asked if he could give me an ETA.  I explained that I was understanding and appreciative, but I did not receive a response.  I am not trying to trash anyone, but I know there are others out there that bricked their drives and thought about sending them in for repair.  I was quick to send mine to GaryOPA due to the reputation here and on xbox-scene.  I thought that 3 months was more than sufficient considering I was told that it would be ready within two weeks once he received my drive.  I was even willing to forget about the drive if he would just email me the firmware since I could always get another drive somewhere else.  Each time I called and inquired about the status, he said "no problem" and confirmed that he would email me the firmware, but that never happened.  He even confirmed my email address and told me he had the email ready to go...but no go.  Yes, I am screwed.  BUT, hopefully others won't get as screwed as I have.  Again, I greatly appreciate the valuable contributions to the community.  It just sucks really bad to get screwed from someone so valued in the community with such a great reputation for quality work.

I have no real opinion here in the first place.

But from what I understand you haven't paid him anything. You were screwed with or without GaryOPA in my eyes. I don't think you could have fixed it in the first place. Secondly, if it takes as long as the 3.0 FW, then i wouldn't hold your breath. Thirdly, good luck and bye bye.

saccorator, thanks for sharing your experience.  I agree that 3 months is more than enough!  Perhaps Gary will be kind enough to respond to this thread (and shed some light on the state of the 3.0 firmware, too).   Wink

Does anyone know if GaryOPA is actually OK?

Does anyone know for sure he didn't get hurt or arrested or payed off by ms or married?

it would explain a lot, here.

The sudden absence, the lack of response to even his hardware repair service, the inability to finish his latest project or even report.

All of these things aren't the person we know. The scene-loyal and helpful GaryOPA.

With Gary's shining track record, I'd sooner wager it wasn't even him on the phone, but a clueless relative or friend trying to help him out?

Don't worry I am alive and well.

I moved locations within Toronto recently, and the setup has
taken a while to readjust things, and clear the backlog of
work and emails and pm's.

This customers Samsung drive will be shipped out before XMAS,
and tracking info will be email to him, just got the internet up
at the new office, all-tho it is slow as hell, been using friend's
internet off and on during the move.

For some reason the old toll-free line can't be moved, so I
switch to a Vonage system (VOIP) and will be updating my
customers via email with the new phone number.

Lots of things to do.... More news later this weekend...

yeah...I hooked it up with the connectivity kit....bad move.  But learning from my mistakes,  I have been successful with others...now, if I could be reunited with mine I have had enough practice.  What can I say, learn from mistakes (in many ways).

GaryOPA - Can you let me know if/when this drive will be shipped out?  I have not heard from you since this post.  I sent you a few PM's, so feel free to contact me.  I am looking forward to getting my drive back.

Thanks!
