If you read the readme file included with the firmware you downloaded you could probably answer your own question but I'll do it for you cause I'm feeling generous tonight.

The 4.2A version runs the DVD at full speed by default but the 4.2B version runs the DVD at slow speed by default. Fast=4.2A=noise but no disc read errors. Slow=4.2B=Quiet=disc read errors on some units like yours.

To get rid of disc read errors on slow spped you must use high quality dvd blanks like verbatim and burn with a good burner like pioneer at slow speed. If after doing that you still get disc read errors then a laser pot tweek could fix it but you would most likely be better off just running the 4.2A and putting up with the noise.

Also, remember that you can change speeds by booting an original game and then swapping out with your backup game. So if you are only having disc read errors on a few games at slow speed and most others are ok then just play those games at high speed. Like Elder Scrolls needs to be played at fast speed no matter what so the firmware option is a nice tool to change speeds when needed. Got it? Good.
