why is every1 thanking people for this its nothing.i would like to see a video showing the back of the tv as well as the front to show there is not 2 360's. would the makers of this firmware hack do this.
also by not releaseing and telling every1 about this ust informs microsoft which you want, maybe a fat cheque from microsoft your after.
if its real good luck to you but i dont see the piont of telling people and then poeple thanking you what for.
You forgot the part about the weirdo aliens that control people with their mind altering plasma guns, and that this was just a trick to lure us all in to the weirdo alien trap? I have hard time believing that MS would buy a altered FW from these guys? what would be the point in that?

kind of a pointless hack but congrats anyhow, and kudos for not releasing.
It would only benefit pirateers and ultimately harm the consumer due to lost revenue for developers.. its shocking however from reading some comments that people dont seem to understand this.
just thinking from a ms point of view they obviously must have pre-empted this type of modification in the planning and design stage, it would be intersting to see what course of action they would take if a n00b friendly tool allowed this firmware mod and thus a flood of 'backups' where being used.
im no 'technical' expert but im sure they would have in place some firmware modification detection process via live and possibly reflash to re-enable there account.. a more obvious sign would be the sheer volume of games in the users live profile being used.
more interstingly with a recent spate of legal cases starting to appear against end user piracy ( RIAA etc. ) i wounder what extent they would go to stamp out / discourage piracy on its new console.. with the live profile and billing being tied to a physical postal address it would be easy to identify those end users of 'backups'... thoughts ?

good job boys! @'the team' I understand the next step you are looking at is a generic firmware, By generic I mean, for any game, I presume you do not mean firmware to work in any drive? What I think would be a more intertesting task is spoofing the unique ID, although I am unsure about how to go about this, I realise this is a much greater task than the firmware. Looking at the firmwares development, I am very surprised that we did not think about this earlier on for the first xbox, I believe it was vaguely addressed on the old XH but never followed up Guess the idea of the BIOS was more focused (esp 'cus people made money of it!) I realise you don't want to release the FW, and obviously this is your choice, but releasing it would present a few interesting challenges, the first to MS to come up with a solution, presumably which would be delivered by Live, I would like to see what they would do!! Also presuming they can come up with a solution, I would like to see/be involved with getting through that, as I would hope it would be of greater challenge than this one! Again, I think the idea of using a MS tool to install the FW is a potential still I believe..

Great work everyone!
You guys have achieved something impressive and all the technical details were very interesting to read along the way.
I am pleased to have been able to contribute something to your success.

Now, do you realize than when we get to boot homebrew apps, it will allow those who whant to illegaly pirate games? Why r we going foward with this then?

Nah. It should be trivial for a selfprogramming chip to read out that ID and use it for further communication. The theoretical workings of such a chip has been known (I know I posted it in the old Xbox1 thread where TheSpecialist started with this, and I'm sure others have too) for a long time and while the white hat (or rather, very grey) hackers who post here state that this will not be published several modchip manufacturers are of course working on this since several weeks back. More interesting is the fact that this is the first hack EVER to only be able to be used for piracy. Existing modchip businesses might want to think twice about touching this at all.

hi guys, i just registered to take part in this thread. are you going to be telling us how you lot did it? did u have to install some chip? or is it only the firmware hacked? sorry dont know much, and when will u tell us about everything. i have heard about this thread from many websites and none of them believe this is true, some come up with the silliest suggestions. anyway, good work guys and try to answer my questions asap. i've been real excited after hearing this news. i been telling my whole family about this, including my grandma who doesnt even know wot games are!!!!! LOL

@ fusi0n - the track is Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up @ monkeychris - just thinking about the id - if you were to spoof it to a generic value then that would surely make it easy for MS to combat, ie check the id of the drive and if it equals the generic ID then refuse to boot and ban from Live? As a sidethought has anyone actually been banned from the 360 Live yet? I know guys were worried who had run the Kiosk disk but never really heard anything of that. See this story is all over the place now, there are still a large group of nonbelievers however, that I don't really understand - is it because they've never seen a hack of this nature before maybe? Maybe it's because the realisation has hit the modchip vendors (and by that I mean the people who sell them - not the people who create them who are incredibly skilled) that they probably won't be able to make any money out of the 360 until they figure out how to boot unsigned code for the homebrew community - and that is the really hard job this time around? Just as a sidethought, I like many others really see the killer app from the original XBox as XBMC - if that had been created with original XDK's and they paid license fees couldn't they have just got MS to sign it so that they could have a commercial product on their hands? Maybe the homebrew community should take a different stance with this generation of the console and instead of seeing it hacked wide open why not develop code for sale through XBox Market Place? Yes I guess they need outlay but if they develop code to the quality of some of the homebrew stuff we've seen on the XBox 1 then I for one would hapily pay for it.... As Apple said - maybe this time we should "Think Different"

Read the technical hacking forums for some pointers .. did u have to install some chip?
The firmware flash chip of the DVD-ROM needs to be replaced or reprogrammed. Currently a way to flash it from a PC without soldering is being researched. Research takes time so don't expect a solution soon. or is it only the firmware hacked?
Yes, DVD-ROM firmware only. sorry dont know much, and when will u tell us about everything.
Can't comment on this. i have heard about this thread from many websites and none of them believe this is true, some come up with the silliest suggestions.
A dumb question does not exist .. And for the non-believers. Believe what you want but it HAS been done.

Awesome. Nice work and congrats. Been following the threads for awhile now and have been very impressed. This community is as tight as it ever was. Which makes me even more angry when reading idiotic n00b replies and disbelief articles like on Kotaku ( usually a great site ). Even though we were once all n00bs it takes a special kind of lack of logical sense to be negatively critical with no prior background knowledge. So, newbies, take a look around these forums, read the threads, see the progress that lead to this before posting anything but a "congrats, nice work!" reply. my 2 cents
