First of I'm quite new to all this so i may be way off.

But I may have had a similar problem (i never tried with a samsung).

Anyway if i put the sata controller I'm using into my primary computer and plug the Hitachi in it wouldn't boot just as u described but when i moved the sata card to a different computer it all worked fine.

Try Ejecting the tray when you use Slax. I had a problem on my v59 that it would hang while flashing and saying it can't spin up the disc. This may fix your problem too.

Have tried what unrars as LIVE-CD 17/5/2006 also p-slax 2.0 alpha1 15/10/06. sata controller is Newlink 2-Port Serial-ATA PCI Card. No option to turn off raid that i can see, boots up b4 anything else, does like a 4 point check then contines to booting from slax. Only sometimes does it pick it up otherwise it hangs.
Even if slax worked when i reboot system into windows, the controller will check the ports again and probably hang on the 1 my hitatchi is conected to !! I did flash a sammy with it and used the sam bootmaker...  that was easy enough.

Is the chip on the controller card from siimage? if so you have a very high chance that the controller is not supported..

I recently used a Ali M5281 (should be similar to urs) to flash 2 Hitachi 59 with the help of the Slax Alpha

however my computer refused to boot with this card (i have a XP 2600+ on a asus A7N8X-Deluxe mobo) it would freeze at the "SATA Screen" i moved the card to my good old Athlon 900 mhz (running on some old Epox KT133 board) and it worked like a charm
