I definately encrypted it.
Ive been hacking away at the earlier firms for a while now. I can get 46,47,58 and 59 all booting both xtreme and NME patched images.
Just 78 doesn't seem to want to even fire up. Its easy to tell if its going to because the very second you power it on , the drive usually makes a very soft short buzz as the firmware tells the sled to rehome itself. A sure sign of working fw.

I have a DIL ZIF socketed Hitachi 46DG..
..and am interested in getting the 78 fw running on my drive. I tried the Revison2 hacked 78 with the corrected checksum and still get nothing other than a rapidly blinking centre LED.
Has anyone else attempted to run an unpatched 78 firmware (other than drive key and checksum) on anything other than the native 78 hardware ?
You can not get the v78 firmware working on a Hitachi 46/47/58/59 drive or a Hitachi 32/36/40 drive or a Hitachi 27 drive. There different levels of PCBoard hardware matched with firmware as Hitachi changes the mapping of the pins on the MN103 controller, and the firmware needs to have the same values, the reason in some cases for a new version build. That it why it is not working in your case, you are trying v78 firmware on a v46 drive. NO WORK EVER! For the record there is so far the following PCBoards: #1: Works with the v10 and v22 and v27 firmwares #2: Works with the v32 and v36 and v40 firmwares #3: Works with the v46 and v47 and v52 and v58 and v59 firmwares #4: Works with the v78 firmware You would need to edit alot of code if you wish to run the v78 firmware on a older drive. Not really worth the time and effort. |

Some more info:
The key is at: 0x04c30 in my firmware. On the other dump i have it's at 0x04b00.
The location where the adress of the key is set, is on both firmwares the same, 9001ad6e.
9001ad6e: fc dc 30 4c mov 0x90004c30,a0
9001ad72: 00 90
If this is true, then it won't be too hard to code a 'generic' patcher IMHO  MS would have made it a bit harder if they'd also randomized this code location (although I'm quite sure it still wouldn't stop any of you guys  ) |

this is not black glue!! its same epoxy like TS drive, but black and more inflexibly! we remove it with hotairgun und scalpel.  if you wish we can make a howto video and also show howto remove the flash chip, but I think it's not really necessary!! |

Here you go, I also removed mine.. The black epoxy is also underneath the flash chip, and even if everything surrounding the chip is removed, it was still quite hard to remove the Flash from the board. In the second picture, you can see the PCB has been heated up a bit to much.. small bubbles can be seen underneath the tracks. So be carefull!   |

can anyone verify a list of compatible flashes that might work with the drive? I am thinking of putting a socketed chip my drive so i can test firmware revisions on the fly.

I already tested fw 59 on 78 hardware, it works. Loads everything. Geremia told me that somebody told him have tested fw 47 on 78 hardware and works too. I am posting a picture of my socketed 78 frankenstein. Please dont laugh Picture1Picture2 |

I have more Good News !!! Excelent News Indeed !!!I tested the Maximus.Xtreme.1_5.for.Hitachi.v0078.REVISION2.rar on my 78 drive and works fine... it gets detected under windows (modeb on tray open tweak). And load originals and backups. I dont know why dont work for stusy and the other guy who try it. Both of them (stusy and other guy) have told me have some troubles with lifted pads, so maybe that was the problem, or maybe defective flash caused by the heat when removing. I can confirm IT WORKS, I just put my keys with firmware toolbox 2.x and encrypt it, I used a fresh new flash chip. No need to set a calculated checksum, just use the revision 2 "as is" (it is with master checksum 00 00 00 00) That of course also implies that you can swap 78 firmwares (bootcode on 40000000 is the same). because mine and the used for revision 2 are both 78 but different (rolling code). Here it is a picture of the drive detected under windows (78 Firmware on 78 hardware):  Edit: sorry for the bad link on the pics of my socketed 78 drive, here are the right ones:   Also I want to say that I just purchased FIFA 07 ORIGINAL and works fine with hitachi 1.5, 2.2, 2.3, 1.6. nice work Carranzafp,good to know that U got the drive working and loading games fine,
from your photos I see U have used another chip type other then the original one removed
from the drive, so as LittleJonny mentioned,a little explanation about flash compatibility with the drive
would be helpfull...
in case someone have damaged the flash while heating and removing it:
is there another possible way to solder some wires and dump the firmware
while still attached to the board !!! then we can remove the flash chip even if it
gets damaged during the process...

The chip I used was the 39VF040 is the same as 020 but double capacity. I am very sure there is a lot of compatible flash from other vendors but no known a link or info to point.
Maybe it is possible to read the chip on board but there are a lot of wires to run and some traces tu cut to make that. Indeed it is less complicated to remove it from the board. (Until a software solution arrives, if ever exists)
By the way, many thanks to Modfreakz for their advices on removal process.
