Sorry for a maybe stupid question:

Does the above mentioned restrictions (no HIT commands anymore, no peek/poke anymore ) only apply when the drive is in mode b? (at least this would explain why the slax cd still works...)?

If this is the case I can generate you a disc containing the 46 flashsec tools and leave the drive in mode a.. Just PM me..

I think works because of uses "Software Induced Modeb". I mean sends Comand E7 47 48 54 30 90 90 D0 01 right ?

Just read on Xbox-Scene, Team Underdog are working on a new NME-360 chip compatible with the v78FK drive.
Maybe there is hope for this drive afterall.

There's more than just hope. A software flash routine is 100% possible and is being finalized. Maybe we'll see it soon here.

I have one of thes in my hands right now. Bought last night from Best buy MFG date 08-21-2006. I'll be waiting patiently for a FW update also noob to this stuff so may need some help. But if you guys need me to try anything and can guide me along I can do that for any testing.

The drive has appeared in most of the big box stores in USA, have not see one myself here in Canada.

I have managed to remove the flash from an 0078 drive.

My key appears to be at 4E10 and not 4B00 as in the dump by stusy. There are also thousands of differences in the firmware.

So...

How far along is the competed item for the 78FK?

I came accross one today that a good freidn of me wanted to firmware for him so he can save some money before christmas.  but it ended up beingthe 78fk version of the hitachi so i regretfully had to tell him i could not help him at this time, but maybe ater.

Also though not if but when the firmware patch would come avaliable liek it did for the other hitachi drives, how would you get the fk version into mode B in the 1st place? and would the actual patching be as easy as it was for other hitachi versions?

This is the reply I just send to tired:

"Looks very different, but maybe we still can beat it, once that you have desoldered and dumped, maybe you can try to re-flash (externally) with the first version dumped (it is on usual places).  And see if the drive boots, so maybe it is a dirty techinique from M$ to cause the software flash routines fail, but no deffense with external"

I just got a 78 here but not 100% removed yet, once removed will do this test myself

perhaps a stupid question but can we flash the drive flash in circuit ?
because if so then we only need to solder only the required wires for reading/programming
if this is possible it is also alot easier to only clean the needed pins on the Tsop so you donīt have to remove all the glue

any thoughts ? i did a lot of in circuit reading of laptop serial eproms but have honnestly not enough technical experience with this kind of flash

I have a dump of the Australian unit.  Appears to have an additional key at the start of the code (not sure, very tired right now, but comes up in the ussual green, its only a few lines, the 16byte key starts at 4b00.  Only problem is that i can read and write the original firmware to the chip, but when i try to flash the patched firmware (using the maximustool and/or hex workshop) with the willem it refuses to flash.   send me an email if you need to look at it.

I just dumped my own 78.  What a pain in the ass lol

Yee I can confirm the "rolling code" been used on 78.  basically they change the order of several parts of the code (included the keys). This will piss of some dvd chips (like globe) since there is no fix place to get the keys.  Also will be hard for software modders (if ever get a software flasher) since a smart application will be needed, not just "go and patch at this location".

We underestimate M$ this time, but it is just round 2. he he

If any of the teams need this drive to work on then let me know, we now have a good supply on them.  Sorry no freebees, ive spent enough money on my own unit getting dumps. Kiss

Maybe they used a 39vf020P on your drive??

On my programmer, there is an option to set Bottom and Top protection on the flash chip for this device.
This seems to be a one time only operation, and can not be undone.
It basically makes the flash chip a ROM.

Too bad that there is not much information on the SST's website about this.
http://www.metatech.com.tw/appnote/sst/pdf/SSTSG.pdf  (page 4) is the only info i could find.

I have not found info on 39VF020P devices, but other similar devices uses a special WP pin to protect the top/bottom blocks when grounded.

My chip is labeled 39VF020 not "P" so I will be doing tests today if it is a "P".

Maybe there is a way to unprotect that blocks... if not, how even they can upgrade the FW?.  maybe they are telling us that M$ will never try to upgrade drive's firmware wich in the end is a good confirmed new
