Thanks for posting this, my drive worked for a year, and ever since the f/w hack came out with backups, and today it just stopped reading 1/2 of my discs (Open Tray). I didn't have a rubber band, so I used a tiny zip tie, put it back together, and voila, it is booting them all again! I had tried all the boot tricks too, this was the only thing that worked!

I found the video hard to follow though, so for those of you that are curious, what you are doing is installing something onto the little metal bar so that the laser can't slide all the way down it... You just need a little at a time until it fixes the problem, don't over-do it...
Hey do you think you can post a picture of it? I had done mine earlier and it was booting backups again. But after a while I was getting a dirty disk and unreognize disk error and it started taking a long time for the game to start. So I decided to try to fix the band again and now I cant get it again. Can you guys show more pics? So I can see where I should put the band at exactly thanks!

Sorry, I already put it back together...

If you look on the drive tray, there are 2 black plastic clips that guide that laser on the metal bar track (rail). There is a square black piece of plastic on the end of the rail that is a "stopper" of sorts. If you look below the laser there is also piece of white nylon plastic that touches when the laser is moved all the way in as well. What you want to do is put an obstacle on the rail itself, so the laser's guide clips don't make it all the way to the square black stopper. You are essentially making it stop before the actual end of the track. You only need about 1/8" or so. For me, the width of the small zip tie was perfect... You will notice that once you have your obstacle in place, the white nylon piece doesn't touch the end anymore either...

Here, I doctored JayQue's image so you can see more clearly...

lazyboi_lol, try version 4.2 of the firmware (Supposed to help with open-tray problems). Also, try cleaning the laser lens with denatured alcohol (99% alcohol, not medical stuff that is only like 80%). You could also try replacing the lens, you can buy replacement lens on a few sites... Some sites even sell replacement drives...

I did the rubberband fix on mine and it worked for a little while but like a few of you stopped after a week or so.  I had already purchased a new lens from www.mod-chip.com.  I stuck it in the 360 and now it boots everything no problem with no rubberband.  In my opinion a new lens is a better fix.  On mod-chip.com they forget to mention that you have to desolder the huge solder point on the board so if you do buy one make sure you remove that solder or the laser wont work.  I might make up a tutorial on installing a laser lens since i searched for hours and couldn't find anything.  It was pretty simple though.  Not as hard as you would think.

I ordered one just to have it on-hand incase it takes a turn for the worse down the road... I would really appreciate it if you put a tut together, I think that would be very useful as we are a year out now and more and more drives are going to start taking a crap on people...

Gcue is the only way to remove that thing is with a desoldering pen or desoldering wick ? I dont have any of those. Could you use something else?

You could try and use a piece of wire, and heat the wire so the solder runs to the wire... Solder wick works excellent, you can get it at rat-hut or whatever, like $4...

What exactly is a solder wick? How do you use it? I just ordered a laser so I would like to get it in as soon as I get it. Smiley

If you are real careful you could just heat it up and scrape it off.  I wouldn't recommend it cause you could damage the board but i have done it a few times hehe.  Sometimes pulling the solder up off the board with the iron making it real thin and then just flicking it off works.  Honestly that is what i did with mine.  But if you mess it up dont blame me.

It is braided copper wire. Simply place it over the solder, then heat it with the iron and, since solder flows towards heat, the solder will absorb into the braided wire.

I have never needed this kind of mod previously, and I admit was very skeptical at first.  Just flashed a friends drive with 4.2A (yes, 4.2) and after a day or 2 he got the open drive error at dash.  No backups would boot, cold or hot, but originals worked fine.  I even tried to start an original first to limit drive speed.  Still no luck.

So I finally gave in and decided to try this.  First try everything went fine, put in a backup and it worked perfectly, even on full speed.  I cant say thanks enough for this discovery, after thinking there was no way this worked, I was proven very wrong.

Just wanna say thanks again for this great workaround!

Mine moved up, down, back, and forth with the solder on but the laser didn't work.  You have to remove the solder to get the laser to fire or whatever.

Thanks a lot to author !!!! - This method fixed "Open Tray" errors on my TS-H943
I used fixator from bulk DVDs pack. Its thickness is fitted exactly for this method.
All copies are run fine again  Smiley
