There is some kind of stealth out for the hitachi drives already.  I'm not sure on the technical details of the stealth firmwares, but the one for hitachi I believe is to prevent Microsoft from detecting the flashed firmware, while the one for samsung is only media stealth. Again, I could be wrong, but there are "stealth" firmwares for both drives already.

What are you waiting for ? GaryOPA's latest release works really great, no problems here. If you want to play backups, here you go. If you want to go live, get another 360 or reflash with your original FW. Always remember the wise man's words

Hehe, nice work, congrats !

However keep in mind that 100% protection is nearly impossible on the Hitachi, since custom code can be uploaded to the drive's memory and executed from there. So MS could always upload a checksum routine 'on the fly' and there's no way this can be stopped beforehand.

I believe that the Sammy can't execute uploaded code, so that drive will always be 'safer'in my opinion. But then again, since one drive can and the other can't, i doubt that MS is going to do this (since they'd have to check what drive is in the 360 and this check forms a big weakness itself of course and could be easily hacked)

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what MS is going to do. But you guys are taking away already quite some options for them

Considering this I don't see a reason to reflash my Hitachi even if there were a stealth fw. As long as you have a fw flashed to your Hitachi which differs from your original fw AND you  are connected to live, M$ might find out and ban you, or worse, dunno. It doesn't even make a difference if you play backups or originals with your drive.
So there's nothing to wait for, except for M$ beginning to ban people and this board to collapse due to that Shocked

I doubt they'd do something that they couldn't do on all consoles.

Even if - what would they really do? Ban your console from live? You waived that right the moment you opened your xbox so don't be supprised when it happens.

The worst they would do is reflash your bios to original - even that i highly doubt.

And rest assured - they're not going to kill your xbox - that would be very bad for business - don't u think? Going against your customer base. The minute you do that - xbox forums will die and ps3 forums will pick up...

Absolutely agree on the last comment! M$ could never have the intention to kill any modded 360's... that would definitely be against their own interest.
But on the same line, why should they ban you from Xbox Live then? Would they so easily give up on subscriptions for Live Gold? Since the very beginning of Xbox 360 distribution, M$ invested a lot of money in Live... they basically started the equation Xbox360=Live! Now, you think it's possible that they could start banning thousands over thousands of people from Live, beacause they have a modded firmware on the Xboxes???
Of course they have been hit hard by this firmware exploit... and this is even more true for software houses! But last thing M$ wants is now to even drop off some good money from Live by banning people from their online community! After all, it's around US$ 30 for each subscription...
They will try to counter attack differently... and most probably they will asses the possibility include in next dashboard updates some internal code to restore original firmwares on the DVD readers. That would be absolutely possibile! They have full control of the Xbox360 system and they can actually manage to program specific routines to access drive's firmware from within the dashboard...
Just my two cents!

imho, they won't ban live untill they hack the hard drive and start loading their own dashboards.  Live was always in M$ vision, however, when the dashboards came out and people started to realize they could get "trainers" for the system (ever wonder of the absence of Gameshark for XB1?).. that seems to be when M$ started to ban people...

I have no problems burning my games and playing w/o trainers... but I know it will be inevitable... The other thing is, how does M$ know about firmware?  It would be hard for them to do something, the firmware checks are all done at post of the system, BEFORE you log onto live for them to do anything... I think it would be hard, save for them loading a dash update which checks against it on boot.. course then its just another firmware update to change what they check.. then starts the cat and mouse game...

just my humble opinion Smiley

I'm not to bothered about stealth firmware, using xbox live will ALWAYS be at your own risk and i prefer not to risk it ...  yet.
But i would like to know if a future firmware for all hitachi drives would enable full speed reading of backups (like original's) , garyopa ?
