I have my PC configured to boot from IDE CD-ROM only, have the Hitachi Xbox 360 DVD drive connected to SATA (no other SATA devices) and 2 IDE hard drives inside system.  When the Xbox is off, boots Slax no problem.  As soon as I turn on the xbox and try and boot (so Slax can see the xbox drive) I lockup at the post screen, before the boot menu runs (can't even run setup).

IN a nutshell - System refuses to boot from IDE CD drive when the Xbox SATA DVD drive is detected.  I have seen the SATA DVD autodetect in BIOS and that has worked fine.

System is ICH5 Dell 400sc so SATA compatibility is there.  It's as if the system attempts to boot from the SATA DVD drive in the xbox even though the BIOS only says it will boot from IDE CD-ROM (I have disabled all other boot options).

Help???  What am I doing wrong???  Is this a BIOS bug with the Dell?

Please help, any suggestions would be really great.  I'm stumped!

First thing, turn your computer on.  Right after the pc starts to boot up, hit the EJECT button on your 360 to power it.  Once the drive is open, windows booths 100times faster.  Also, if you want flashing to go alot quicker, boot into safe mood.  You will notice the difference in speed an ease of flashing 360s.

Just thought I'd share what I had to do to fix this, maybe it will help others.

I had to go out and get a SATA DVD-ROM drive from the store.  Hooked that up, then finally the BIOS got past the post session (bios would just NOT get past the initial posting with the 360 drive conneted).  As soon as it did, I hot swapped over to the Hiatchi drive while windows booted.  No issues from there.

I think the big difference in this issue is that this was not a windows lockup issue, the freeze happened before windows even had a chance to start booting.  This was on the PC's BIOS/motherboard level, so no amount of timing or waiting to turn on the xbox would work.  For the BIOS to detect the Hitachi, it has to be turned on at bootup, and that just wouldn't fly.

Just seems that the onboard SATA controller in my Dell (I tried 2 different Dell desktops) can't BIOS-detect that drive, and locks up.  The BIOS did fine with the retail SATA DVD drive.

Hope it helps others.

It is an issue with the dell. I have ran into this many times and what you have to do is wait to connect the sata cable to the dell untill it tells you drive on sata port 0 not found.
