Yep, you can flash right over any current firmware, no matter the version before.

With this patch, thanks to Geremia, you don't need any more tricks to boot games
and no more pot tweaks. All games load in under 10 seconds.

Thanks for the quick reply, Gary.
That is the best news so far for Hitachi owners! Smiley  Great job!

I am going to increase the POT much closer to stock level (4.03 K Ohms) or at least much higher than 2.92, just to be safe (in terms of prolonging laser life).
I may pick 3.5
I only tested one disc (DOA4 original retail disc) after flashing to 1.2, so the laser hasn't been used long with the 2.92 K ohms setting.
(I read that the 47DJ can SUPPOSEDLY be "safely" lowered to 2.60, but I still feel I may as well increase it, since it isn't needed anymore...).

PS: I used SS Merger 1.6; forgot to mention that tool in my earlier list. Smiley

@garyopa

Can you overwrite any current firmware with a new firmware without features from the current firmware affecting the new firmware when its flashed? For example, I flashed my drive yesterday when birdys first release came out and that still has the eject trick, so can I just flash your fw over birdys version and the eject trick will be gone? Any info would be great.

Yep, just flash over the other release, and the "eject trick" will be gone.

Sad
Just tried to flash with GaryOPA v1.3 (and 47DJ drive):
Steps 7 and 9 both failed with 'device(IO) control failure' (or something very similar).
I used Slax Live CD to boot then restarted PC, just like last time.
Hitachi tray OPEN during flash (otherwise Windows always hangs), also same procedure as last time.

It did say 100 done at the end, but the two errors with v1.3 are new (with v1.2 all 9  steps were successful).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

PS: Sense code was 05/26/00 if it helps...

PS2: I tried running it again, since someone else had retried 3 times after getting the same error and it worked on the 3rd try.
In my case, it said "Making Hitachi Xtreme...........process not needed..."

UPDATE:
I restored to the original one (think step 5 of 9 failed with the IO error, same sense code as before.
It ended with '100' though for what it's worth.
Then I tried running v1.3 again; this time step 3 of 9 failed (and steps 7 and 9 were fine)!
Tried once more and step 3 (security sector) once again failed with sense 05/26/00.

I don't want to unhook the setup until I am sure the drive is okay...

Should the tray be open or closed (does it matter?).

I would go back to v1.2, but I already moved the POT for the DVD laser back up (now at 3.67),
so I need the fast booting benefits of v1.3, especially with a 47DJ drive.

Thanks!

I'll try one last time; then I'll hook the console up to a TV and see what happens...

This last time around the restore.bat didn't have any failed steps.
However, other than the first time, where flash.bat had an issue with steps 7 and 9, step 3 (security sector read) consistently fails, while the other 8 all run fine (i.e. steps 7 and 9 no longer fail, but step 3 does).
Which step(s) failed in your case, if you recall? 7 and 9?

I tried a couple more times and finally the flash (v1.3) went through all 9 steps without any sense codes!
Smiley
I did kill a few tasks in task manager, just in case that might help. Not sure if that was it or not, though...
In any case, I am a happy camper now.

I am typing this on another PC now, since I turned that one off and will now try the console out...  I'll update this post with the outcome.

The results are in:
My original games still work fine.
The back-up (latest CloneCD @ 4X with Verbatim DL [I'll check the media ID shortly] on Pioneer 111D with DBros RPC fw 1.23) does NOT work; unfortunately I don't have another console to test the disc on to be sure it isn't something with the burned disc.
I even tried the trick that consists of holding down the controller on button till the four lights stop dancing clockwise.
NOTE: This test was with the pot back up at 3.67, I increased it based on the info posted by GaryOPA regarding v1.3 media detection (reading).
Maybe it is just this, supposedly very picky, 47DJ drive - meaning I should pot tweak (down to 3 or so), which worked for others with this drive with previous Xtreme fw (before media detection was improved)??

I'll keep researching.

For some reason the 'modify' button doesn't show any longer (I wanted to edit my previous post, which I was able to do earlier).

Anyway, I have a suspicion something is wrong with the backup. I don't feel like playing with the POT again till I have tried another backup first:
I will bring a few of my originals to my friend's house today or tomorrow and ask him to back up one or two of them with his Samsung. Then I'll try again.

I'll post an update.

Keep up the great work Gary (and Birdy)!

 i've tried (GaryOPA Xtreme v1.3 Hitachi-LG Firmware 7in1)

the drive i have is: Hitachi 0047

the error i got ?  was this... Flashing 1/9 sector 90003000 <v1.3 - custom code>.....

Device IO Control<> failed 0
failed to execute flasher <sense: 05/26/00>

is the flashing stable....

done.
done.

all the other 2/9 flashing was 100% compeleted without any problem.

i've connected the drive back to x-box 360 it seem to work flawless! tried my original call of duty 2 boots 100% without any problem. tried some of my backup dvd movies works 100%

and i used ...  XENO  Connectivity Kits TO DO MY FLASHING.

Quick update:
The first backup was indeed faulty in some way.

I backed up another one of my originals at my buddy's apartment after dinner (he has a Samsung luckily) and the backup worked fine when I got home!
This is with the POT currently back up at 3.67 (stock was 4.03) from the 2.92 I had originally put it to, before v1.3, which doesn't need the POT tweak for Hitachi's any longer, was released .
Well, I can certainly confirm that since the 47DJ I own is said to be one of the pickiest...
(I only used it for a few minutes yesterday with the POT at 2.92 K Ohms).

Does it make sense to turn the POT back up to 4 or so (almost stock), since the tweak isn't needed, or is 3.67 safe enough (not to reduce laser lifespan) for a Hitachi 47DJ?

I want to re-assemble everything, but not before I have the POT where it will stay....

Once again, great job!!!

Now I no longer have to worry about scratched discs, since I will leave the originals cased and use the backups, especially when guests or family are playing with the console...

Don't ask for firmware hacks here. Your going to have to find them on your own.

I have a 47DJ myself. I will let you know when I start on on 360. Im still waiting for DVR-111, Via sata pci card, and some DL dvds, and I have to read how to do the backup with my drive. Lots of work, but im sure i can get it to work.

Eric

of course you can hack it without having the readily available hacked firmware
you just dump your fw, destroy the various checks, make the fw read the SS off another sector and voilą Smiley

and i used ...  XENO  Connectivity Kits TO DO MY FLASHING.

no need for advertisement here

I flashed mine this morning over version 1.1, it gave me a sense failed IO on a step, I think it was step 3 or 4, the one about security sectors, but it seems to work fine, backups now load just like originals, before I had to start the console with the game inside the drive or it wouldn't load.
