I think this is the best question for me to ask as my searching for what drives the xbox360 i want would be is just getting too difficult.

I do plan to get an xbox360 in australia within the next week and i want to know if it's drive will be compatable with any of the popular firmware hacks that are mentioned here.

So is every drive compatable? Which means i don't have to be concerned about walking into a game store and buying an xbox360 that is incompatable with the firmware hack?

If someone knows the correct answer, then a mod can close this topic if that is standard practice here. I don't want to clutter up the board and i'm just having trouble finding the answer to this question on my own. I apologize if its obvious.

There's a philips drive that no firmware is out for yet, and I think I read somewhere that there is a v52 of the hitachi that currently has no firmware.

I noticed on the wikipedia entry for the xbox360 that it says "Philips drives were only used in pre-release development xbox 360s.", so this v52 of the hitachi is the only potential problem?

The new firmware hack by GaryOPA says "This works for v32, 36, 40, 46, 47, 58 and 59 of Hitachi drives.", so if the v52 is incompatable, then its likely that the xbox360's in australian stores are the 58 or 59 versions....i hope, lol.

I'm just terrified of getting an xbox360 with incompatable firmware, its such a pity that i can't just look at the barcode or something to figure this out, lol.

It's not likely to be a problem at all. It's just that nobody has had a chance to look at the firmware yet.

If you open an X360 and find a "Hitachi" drive not supported, just make
a memdump and send me it via "email" and within 48 hours, maybe even
the same day, I will release a version that is compatible. Did that with both
version 58 and 40 for users with them.

I have bought the xbox360 and i have a toshiba samsung drive.

But i have absolutely no idea if its an ms25 or ms28 firmware version. From what i have read, its impossible (currently) to apply the firmware hack to ms28 drives (keeping in mind i have no access to a second xbox360 and just the one i own).

So what i am asking is, how will it be possible for me to apply the firmware hack to an ms28 firmware drive if that is the firmware i have? I know its easy to just open up the console, but im not going to void the warranty unless its possible to apply the firmware hack.
