DvD+R DL are harmful for the laser and work on another frequency range.
 DvD r are rather similar to that DvD Rome and work on demdelben frequency range, which preserves the laser.
TheSpecialist already expressed itself to the problem, which would not be it a problem, to edit it.
The inquiries come directly only from the drive assembly, not from the Dashboard.

The Firmware hacks already work on single layer DVDs.  Just read the Readme and you would see that.

The only problem is finding a game that is small enough to fit on a single layer DVD.

It simply says where to put SS, easier on layer0 than layer1 (cause of offset calculation pain for layer1).
It doesn't says he patched the phisical format information response and similar, infact you have to change booktype yourself with burner.
Plus, you should edit phisical format information inside SS to match the SL disk type, just the very first bytes, some could be the same as DL, but for example channel bit length is different. So even if you pass the pre authentication checks, you'll fail if you use original SS (disk will be unreadable once unlocked), you'll fail again with an edited SS (to match SL disk phisics), don't know why, i've tried to edit SS, maybe there is some checksum or simply the console doesn't accept the phisical format information contained in that SS.

Mmmm, very nice information Garyopa and Geremia.  I didn't know that, I don't even know that much about these firmware hacks.   I just know how to use them, and all the information I can get out of C4E's Readme's (that's my limited knowledge).  So Geremia, what you're saying is that even if it can fit on a single layer disc, that it would not work because the data is in different locations and that is specified by the game developers.  Since they have DVD9's, they might as well use all of it, even if they don't have to.  So they throw the data around a bit, spreading it around the disc persay.  And since we can't change the layout or files on the disc, we're stuck with how the developers made them, and have to back them up the same.  This means that even if the SS does load from the first layer, it's irregardless because all the data has to be in its original layout (Double Layer).

Is that right?  Sorry for my lack of knowledge.

@Interloper, yeah, you're right, I completely forgot about the XEX signature.  Making it switch to DISC 2 would require editing files on the original disc, which we can't do.  If we could, we sure as hell wouldn't be messing with trivial firmware hacks (even if they are fun).  I don't know what I was thinking, just another noob moment.

files layout on disk, i think, is not a problem and not been checked at all. Files layout is xdvdfs filesystem stuff, but prior to look to filesystem of game partition, the game partition have to be visible, so authentication/unlocking process have to success. Problems are here.

First, thanks a thousand times C4E..

I have a problem, when I am about to start a game on my flashed Hitachi 46DH I always get the unrecognized disc problem.

The first game i tested was Edit: Don't talk about illegal files correctly integrated with SS Merger 1.6.
This game was burned with a NEC ND-3540A fw 1.01 on a TRAXDATA DVD+R DL and the first time I tried it I got a message saying something like You have to update your dashboard to run this game... I updated and restarted and since then I always get the unregocnized disc problem. I've tested Quake 4 with the same burner and a TDK DVD+R DL but with the same result.
I can't test the soft-reset trick since I have bought the core system, no HD-Switch or HDD.

And yes I know what is said in the readme: Unreconized disc/dirty disc error is due to incompatible media/burner/SS for use with Hitachi. Best results are found using Verbatim media and Pioneer burner.

Now to the question ..
What do I need to change? The media or the burner? Or has it anything to do with the update that happened when i first started MotoGP?
