Links 2004 Ping Limit

So I am interested in playing Links 2004 over the net with a friend of mine in Illinois. The problem is that his ping is too high and this game has a ping limit embedded in it. Has anybody ever figured a way around this? I know this is a 10 year old game that few people even care about, but this is my favorite golf game of all time. So if anyone knows a way (a modified xbe or something) or would like to take a crack at it, your help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Does it give you an error message/fail at any specific point? Or the exact limit in milliseconds? I don't really have the setup to reproduce and debug, but maybe static analysis will be enough.
