My Xbox wont play discs but the drive is good...

I have read a million of these posts with no success. A little about my situation.
I have a few older RROD xboxs that I am fixing and one in particular runs fine and will play my arcade games saved on one of my HDDs but when I put in a game disc, it says "To play this disc, put it in an Xbox 360 console". Everything I have read basically stops right here and the general consensus is that the drive is bad, HOWEVER, the drive is out of my personal playable xbox, it works 100% of the time in that xbox. This tells me that the problem is with the xbox itself. Has anyone encountered this issue before?
I also have 4 drives that are giving me some issues too. While each drive is inserted into my GOOD Xbox, directly after the drive reads the disc (an xbox 360 game), it says "Play DVD" and then boots up to the screen that says "To play this disc, put it in an Xbox 360 console". Does this mean all 4 of these drives are bad or is there an update I need for each drive?
I have seen a few tutorials on how to "flash" your dvd drive but I have not been able to find the reasoning behind it. What is the purpose of flashing it? Is there a correlation between this and my last question?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

make sure you are using the correct DVD Key to begin with, if that drive works fine in another console it's cause it has the key of the other console.
You can't just pop in the drive and expect it to work, the reason flashing is necesary is cause of the dvd key must match that console.
