I want to install a separate SATA/power cable in my box so that the drive can be easily updated without the hassle of taking it apart.

My question. (if anyone knows the answer)

Which pins from the J1D1 are needed to flash the drive. I was hoping only 12 &/or 5v connections (pins 7-12) that way I can use the integral SATA power port on my adapter. (obviously i have no need for eject etc..)

J1D1 here for ref

If you're trying to power the drive without 3.3v, I'm not sure, but my (wild) guess would be no.  Maybe test it by pulling out those leads and see if it still responds?

Yeah that's pretty much it...

Might aswell try i guess I think I have a spare power cable.

I guess I could take 3.3 from the mainboard somewhere just a bit of a pain.

If your SATA power cable is coming directly from your power supply and not being adapted from a molex connector, it should have 3.3v on it.  Good luck.
