I bought a 360 slim off of ebay that was listed as faulty. The faulty being that sometimes on cold boots \ first few boots the 360 will run for anything up to a minute and the power itself off, I've noted the following:

1. Shuts off to a Orange Light on the power supply. Power supply is good as i've checked it with another.
2. Once It's shut itself off you cannot restart it until you unplug it and plug it back in to mains power
3. Shuts off with the Power on button sound
4. If it runs for over the say minute period it plays normally without it powering itself off.
5. Doesn't happen everytime I boot the 360 on a cold boot.
6. Sometimes it doesn't happen for about a week.
7. Wireless controllers function Fine.

Had a look around on the internet and there's alot of evidence to suggest there are alot of faulty touch sensors on the slims. But is it the touch sensor buttons ribbon cable or the RF board itself thats faulty?

Therefore I disconnected the faceplate eject and power-on button ribbon cable from the rf board 3 weeks ago and had not had any power off issues. Plugged it back up today and the issue returns.

So i thought i'd do some more troubleshooting to narrow down whats causing my issues.

Thinking it might have been the power-on touch sensor only today I covered it's contacts where it enters the ROL board connector with sticky tape to disable it completely, leaving only the eject sensor enabled. Which resulted in the Eject function having issues like stopping ejecting after afew tries. Remember while the power-on touch sensor was enabled the eject functions were fine the only problems were random poweroffs.

So what I'd like to know is is it the touch sensor ribbon cable thats faulty or the touch sensor components on the RF ROL board?

I don't have a spare slim so I cant swap parts around.

Anyone?

anyone...

I had a similar, but not the same, issue with a slim. Would run normally for a few minutes then shut off, but mine would turn power supply LED red. Had to unplug from mains to clear red LED, once re-plugged would work again. Turned out the fan in power supply was not spinning so it overheated and would shut off. Fixed fan, all good now.

For this to be your issue as well, I guess it would have to be pretty cool/cold wherever you have your power supply for it to play normally for very long without shutting down though.

I realize this info may be of the "common knowledge" variety, but serves as a "bump" at least  Smiley

I've ordered a replacement eject and power touch sensor ribbon cable off of ebay hopefully this fixes my problems otherwise it's gotta be the components on the RF \ ROL board that deal with the power and eject capacitance touch buttons, in which case i'll have to just replace the whole RF \ ROL board.

i have a slim from a m8 that does the same thing, basically its the ribbon cable having a hairline crack in it then it shorts out at random times, just where the two circuits meet and run parallel.

his xbox beeped randomly and switched itself off and on.

taped it down but it didnt last, new one ordered will report back after i replacde it in next few days.

I scrape the ribbon a little and use the conductive pen. when it dryes it gives contact.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found this while searching on Google. I have an xbox360 slim that's doing this same exact thing. Did anyone ever find the fix for it ?

Clean the touch buttons with alcohol and examine the cord for damages, but mostly the touch buttons are just dirty

Thanks for the reply. I guess it should be worth mentioning that even if I strip the console down to just the motherboard and ROL board, it still randomly powers off. The power/eject cable was not plugged in when this started happening.

rob203zob see what happens if you remove the rol board completely. If you can still power the console on with either a 360 media remote or a wired controller, wireless with play and charge might also work if connected and it stops random poweroffs then that means the rol circuit board is faulty and needs replacement.

Other than that try another known good power supply.

Thanks for all the replies guys, such a helpful forum here Smiley

I'm going to go with finalman's suggestion here and unplug the ROL board from the console and see if it still acts the same. I'll report back with my findings to see if this fixes it.

Okay so I'm back from testing and it still has the random power offs with the ROL board disconnected  Undecided  A little backstory:
-I bought the console for $60 from the pawn shop because they knew it had this issue
-The xbox didn't come with the power cord or any accessories, so I'm using this adapter -http://www.amazon.com/360-Slim-Adapter-Power-Supply-Convert/dp/B004PALCKS and the power brick from my phat xbox
-I thought it was overheating so I replaced the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5
-Checked the motherboard for any bulging capacitors
-Checked the solder for the power connecter underneath the motherboard
-The warranty sticker was in-tact when I bought it, so I don't think anyone else was messing around with it

I don't think the power cord is the problem because the person who sold it to the pawn shop was having the same issue. I've tried 3 different (confirmed working) phat power bricks and the slim still powers off. I tried the adapter with my friends slim and it works just fine. I may just end up selling this on eBay or something because I don't want to spend too much money on it.

I never found the fix for this issue on my 360 which i've since sold. Even replacing the power eject ribbon cable didn't work.

Up until I sold it I removed the power and eject ribbon cable from it's socket and it solved my particular issue.

If I had to take a guess i'd say my issue was caused by a faulty ROL board.

rob203zob I think your problem is much more serious and it would be like finding a needle in a haystack so yeah your probably better off selling it.

Yea that's exactly how I feel. I just hate giving up on things, that's why I've held on to it for so long. It's about time I get rid of it. Thanks for all the help everyone, it was truly appreciated  Cheesy
