since the region is encoded in the dvd and the console reads it from the disc, could it be possible to modify the firmware hack so that when the console asks for the region code the dvd drive always answers the same region? or does the region check is more complex?

the region check is NOT done by the drive, it's done by the system. without a hack of the 360 firmware itself, region free will be impossible.

I know the region check is done on the system, but the system must read the region info from the disc, so in theory it could be possible to make the dvd drive give a fake response saying always PAL or always NTSC, no?

Are you talking about movies or games?

SS and xex - modify the xex and the signature won't be valid anymore
SS depends on the xex...

the xex is checked by the system. if you modify the drive to patch the region bit of the xex, you break the signature just as if you had hexedited the xex. it's simply not possible.

ah, I see, then I guess it can't be done unless somebody finds a way to run unsigned code.
