I know it seems like im beating a dead horse with this project, but more than anything it is an informative post. The ones that have been around long enough will know that the Philips DROM6316 will act very similar to a BenQ VAD6038 when flashed with its firmware, Team MODFREAKz documented this information in this topic. That was geared more towards having the DROM6316 inside the 360. smokeingit over at X-S had a similar idea to me, but had both the motor polarity and eject functions hard wired and controlled manually ( documented in this topic ). I Absorbed all that info and went to the drawing board.

This is what i came up with - reversed motor, tray cut and rocker switch wired.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=1I1J8PB7Yl-DRF2bH6g0m8_ZejcKa4ffLK7wwk6bGm9LxOgLoFo4tDIMBf3S_

And there is your internal 0800 drive, they are hard to come by, hopefully someone knows how to source them and make it more readily available (like the kreon drives). Or start salvaging them so they don't become landfill. I can't take any credit for it because it was Team MODFREAKz and smokeingit that did all the hard work, i just tinkered a little as i always hated having the LiteOn or BenQ sitting on top of my case ( i consider myself a little OCD ). :)

Happy Modding guys !

awesome mod!!

drive is like hen's teeth to find though...

does any other Philips drive work for this mod?

id like to have a 0800 drive built into my pc instead of having to take my pc apart every time i want to back up a new game.

The only other drive i know of that acts in a similar matter is the Hitachi/LG GDR-H10N (mimics the 78/79 Hitachi). IIRC the Hitachi 78/79 drives don't read ap 2.5 challenges? The firmware revisions on the GDR-H10N block certain holes which make writing via sata impossible (?). Last i read of it ppl were using TSOP programmers to read/write (correct me if im wrong).

Sorry guys hit the wrong button.

According to some sites Dell renamed the drive to "WH522", well that is according to these computer salvage sites. Also did some digging and on Dells support page these are the machines they put the drive in

You can but the whole machine and salvage the drive for $10 Tongue also some floating on ebay here not a bad deal if your american.

Im pretty sure they were all produced with MT chipsets, on another note the DROM 6216 might be another alternative, but has and IDE interface?

whaa?! As the owner of a Samsung 616T [remember those?], I'm simply amazed that this never occurred to me. And more importantly, that another standard pc drive that could be crossflashed surfaced right under my nose. I want one! This would be the perfect drive for ripping XGD3/SSv3.

Got my "WH522" through today although no sign of this on the packagaing to suggest that is correct.

It has the same chipset as fat Liteon though. and model number DH-16DS2... cant be read by JF but can be read by Dosflash...

Might just flash the Liteon ripping FW on there and see if it works. Drive is useless to me if it doesnt anyway lol.

Took a quick pic

Unsure why i shot it next to the BenQ i dont have a liteon 360 drive here.

Any suggestions/comments welcome! Ta

Edit: Update, drive isnt recognised when flashed to liteon 0800 although dosflash was quite happy to read/write and erase

Does it matter which revision the drive is?  I'm finding DROM6316/44 and DROM6316/97...

Yeah that's definitely not the right drive, Matt. The PCB is completely different than what is shown in the original guide made by modfreakz.

Nope. DosFlash will erase either way.

@matt "WH522" is the dell replacement part identifier, they still use Philip branding  Cool

The Dell Part number was nothing like WH522. (although tbf it is a branded part + the pictures on google are different)

Shame it wont work with the liteon fw, same model/chipset etc, i guess if i was a bit more inteligient i could probably find a way lol

Not to worry, im not going to bother faffing and sending it back for the sake of £13, just leave bad feedback and perhaps keep an eye out for a genuine 6316!!

there are a few wh522's on ebay and a drom6316 (lot of 2, has 5 lots) on there as well... there are a few companies online that have the droms as well.... might take the plunge and buy one.

I have managed to find a couple "suppliers" who have 25+ listed for both new and used drives... I'm waiting on a stock and pricing quote from them. I will post up links once I can verify they actually have drives.

Mate of mine picked up a DROM6316 from eBay the other week, I did this mod on it last weekend. Even had the same switch (courtesy of a faulty USB hard drive enclosure).

Excellent mod, works a treat. One tip though: take the tray bezel off before you start work, it's a real pain in the arse getting the drive apart to work on if you flash 0800 first (like I did).
