Hello I have a ICH7 sata chipset or a VIA card. (VIA is not plugged it atm, will involve mucho component rearranging to fit her in)

Am I correct in saying you need to be in vendor mode before attempting to drill?

I've tried to get vendor mode in jungle flasher 1.85 with the on-board ICH7 but no joy always get status 51.  (am i missing a step i.e. pmt probe?)

Would using VIA card get drive into vendor mode and allow me to flash once SPi was unlocked?

It won't work with VIA 6421, you can forget-it
try to do that with the new version of Jungle Flasher 0.1.86b
the intel sata chipset are the best ever!! it's strange

Works for me with ICH9R (unlockSPI) and x360usb (in JF).

I've had a similar problem to you.  The only way around it is to power off the drive, reboot the computer, wait for Windows to start up, and then power the drive.

The first action should then be to use JF/Dosflash to intro the drive to vendor mode. 

I've found that if I have the drive powered during windows start, that Windows interacts with the drive and there's no way to reset the SATA bus to its initial state.  (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

You will only be able to intro one time per reboot, so if you exit vendor mode for some reason, you need to power down the drive and reboot.

Woohoo got vendor mode finnaly.  Had to swap sata ports.  Xbox drive on first port, hd on second.

Tried latest jf but still no vendor mode.  Always status 51.

for obteining vendor mode you need PMT (pogo mo thoin or probe3). follow the steps:

1- run JungleFlasher;
2- chose the correct sata port where drive appear in JF;
3- select from MTK tabs intr/device id;
4- when the message appear, power off the drive, put the PMT in MPX01 (it's the circled point on pcb, near sata connector)
5- answer yes and power on the drive (with PMT still in mpx01)

now you have your drive in vedor mode, and can proceed with the method you want.

Drive is flashed now, thanks to all those that helped.

Had to restart my pc every time I needed to intro but got there in the end.

Hi, 

You absolutely CAN use a VIA VT 6421 PCI to SATA card to do this. 
Instead of using the sata ports on the vt6421 run an ide ribbon cable from the vt6421 adapter to an ST Labs "S-250" SATA 150 to PATA adapter (other sata to pata adapters will probably work as long as they use a JM 20330 chip). The ST Labs adapter needs a ide type molex 12v and 5v power supply. I put a single throw, double pole on/off switch on the 12v+ and 5v+ wires leading to the ST Labs adapter as this gets around having to reboot the PC after every successful intro. This particular ST Labs adapter is designed to plug directly into a sata hdd so I removed the sata power supply part and used a 360 dvd power adapter. The jumper setting on the ST Labs adapter is set to Master.

Can you be a little more specific?  I couldn't intro 0225 or 0272 with vt6421.
