Just slide it over, it will unlock. don't drip it in alcohol, just a little moisture is enough

Some can be re-unlocked with just a deep breath on them... Try

Not sure if anyone has suggested this.  

Ok since we are cutting the WP trace that is connect to ground, why not first connect multimeter between drill bit and ground.  

Then during drilling, use meter's continuity test mode to alert us once the drill bit hits the grounded trace.

This will be safer then relying on SPI status changes.


EDIT:  Sorry its not safer.  Learned my lesson.

Do this simple test. Put the prongs together and apart really fast. Multimeter wont register anything

Not the old analog one, use a digital one.  My digital meter is instantaneous with both LED and a buzzer alert.

I'm using led for this thing, I drill until I hit the ground (led on) and then use needle to to cut the wp wire. I think it's much safer.

This depends on the multimeter. Good multimeters register very fast shorts. My Fluke registers very fast and my cheap chinese ones are quite slow.

So as suggested in the quote, test your multimeter first.

Finally got to try out my idea with the meter, and it worked out perfectly.  

The meter's buzzer alerted way before spi status changed, prompting me to slow down.  Was getting worried as the hole got bigger but the meter gave assurance to continue digging.  Here is the resulting crater!



EDIT:  Damn!  Ignore my nonsense above.  I've just destroyed a drive despite all the care.  Warning - don't ignore the risks.  Drilling a hole will always be extremely dangerous.  I'm going back to pcb swaps and the new glitch mod.
