No problem on flash CFW directly, since you has used your original dummy as source.

stuck on status 80, i suspect a faulty spi, will the drive go into vendor mode without an spi? or at least show a status change in jf?

I have disassembled a SH-D163B right now, but there is no MT1339, it is an MT1309. What a pity...
Does it have to be D163C?

EDIT:
Yeah, bought a D163C and there is a MT1339E in it.

I got the MT1339E+MX25L2005. I also just used one set of 0225 unlock pro kit (xecuter). It got the MX chip on a white pcb with a switch. What does the switch do? Set MX pin 3 to GND or 3.3V? I already gave the modded machine back to the customer and did not measure what the switch does.

You can also use TS-H353C drives as source for the MT1339E. They have the same drive board as the SH-D163C.
The "C" is very important. "B" drives have older boards with other controllers.

There is a couple of guys selling "pro kits" on Ali-Baba. Check it out... http://www.china-direct-buy.com/v/4/product_detail/8995639/MT1335We_mediatek_for_xbox360_Slim_lite-on_16d4s_dvd_drive.html
Don't know the price though... It can't be more than their original "first buyer" was charging us...  Grin
Just mentioning because getting parts from here and there, dismantling, adapting, tweaking... just too lazy for that
If somebody already posted this, sorry i didn't check here in a couple of days. Embarrassed

Is there any need to do any extra locking like in the xecuter pro kit?
I installed one pro kit but did not measure how the locking switch works.
Does it only switch MX25L2005 pin 3 between GND and VCC?

YES,you need to keep SPI locked in both in hardware and software after you write FW.

HARDWARE LOCKED = PIN 3 of spi tied to GND.
HARDWARE UNLOCKED = PIN 3 of spi tied to VCC(3,3v)

SOFTWARE LOCKED = spi status 0x8C
SOFTWARE UNLOCKED = spi status 0x00

If my set is not going online, are there any other actual problems with leaving it unlocked?
