Any additional ideas are welcome - games freeze within a minute or two of playing them - DVDs play fine.
So far I have:
Cleared the cache
Tested the hard drive
Cleaned the chips and unit interior and done the x-clamp fix
Replaced the dvd-rom with a brand new on (swapped the control board - Lite-On to Lite-On - brand new)

It still works in exactly the same manner as when I first started trying to fix it - games just freeze inside of 2 minutes.

I've gotten a great education on how to fix everyone else's xbox 360 but am stumped and ready to chuck this one.

Any ideas?

Hm...  Is that a XBR JTAG ?  Roll Eyes

If so, that's your problem ... Wink

Early version XBR bugs fits exactly the description you gave.

Try putting an wired controller on the USB port in the back (the one close to the network connection) and power the console using the guide button of that controller.

If it boot to a blue screen which looks like a PC booting, it's a XBR console.

All,

Thanks so much for your response, your time is sincerely appreciated.  Forgive my inexperience, but I'm unfamiliar with what information will help you diagnose my problem.  Can you tell me where on the unit I need to look to provide the info you need to offer advice?  Here is what is easily viewable on the back of the unit:

Product ID: 41408/66462406
Serial Number: 4C8766462406

Let me know where to find any additional info you need.

Thanks!!!

did you even have the right dvd key?
the freezing is due to a bad solder ball with-in the GPU or HANA.
reheat one of those to the proper temp..
it also seems like you don't have your key?

If the game starts at all, he has the right key.  On the consoles that I've done that froze during gameplay (usually 10 min or so), reflow of the gpu fixed it.

Could you tell me how to reflow the GPU?  Any detail would be extremely helpful as I'm pretty new to this stuff.  I'll check on youtube to see if there's a tutorial as well.  Thanks for all your responses!!

Sincerely,

Eric

It's been covered elsewhere, but I don't consider myself an expert that should be providing walkthroughs on it anyhow.  Good luck.
