Of course not, you have to program it once with a pic programmer. If you use a bootloader, you can then program it through USB afterwards.

If you get device unknown, you are not starting it right. Remove the power plug/switch off the power to the console, turn it back on, press power and then immediately eject. No other USB devices can be connected.

For anyone interested in how the jailbreak does its trick there is some information about the reverse engineering here:
http://ps3wiki.lan.st/index.php/PSJailbreak_Exploit_Reverse_Engineering

There seems to be a number of things that the guys who developed the jailbreak know isnt yet available to the other hackers. They have had to copy parts of code without understanding the reason for it? perhaps I am mistaken.

The interesting part for me is the significance of the code
Code:
04 21 B4 2F
in the configuration descriptor of port 2. this could turn out to be trivial though. Also how the device tries to authenticate as a jig and fails.

Perhaps this could mean that the guys who developed the jailbreak also have some kind of advantage at exploiting later firmwares, (as they claim on their website). Or perhaps sony have killed the whole backbone of the exploit.

The original device is called PSJailbreak, and removing execution restrictions on a device I thought was called jailbreaking. Feel free to split hairs though. We can call it "heap overflow magic machine" if you want.  Grin

Anyway just wondering if PSJailbreak are talking s*** when they say their device will still work in future with extra support. I suspect its a ploy to keep sales coming in. Plus its too early for them to make such a claim so soon after the firmware update.

I see some PS3 stuff has started showing up on xbins
